Although Bonnybridge has a library, I think your best bet would be Falkirk Library or the Falkirk Council archives at Callendar House.

Thanks for your reply Wilton
I have been in touch with a lady from Callender House but they do not have any records regarding Steins. It has all been taken over in the 1970's into a number of other companies. My grandfather William Anderson was a foreman patternmaker at Steins and my father James Moffat worked there as well.

I guess you have already seen the book Stein of Bonnybridge by Kenneth Sanderson?

No I haven't Imber. If it is online then I have a chance of reading it but being in Australia, I doubt if I will find it in any of our libraries

Just noticed that there's a reference to a wages book here:

http://www.monklands.co.uk/glenathill/bricks.htm

As regards the book I mentioned I read somewhere that copies even turn up in the Middle East!  However, rather than wait for one to pass your way you may wish to buy a copy from this excellent site which specialises in second hand books.  They seem to have a copy listed at the moment:

I worked in the patternshop  at J.G.Steins in the 1950s and 1960s. This must have been some time after your grandfather as I haven't heard his name being used.  I lived in Allandale up until 1960 and a few years ago I wrote a small book about the village and Steins who owned the houses. You can read a copy of the book by going to www.allandalecottages.co.uk. There is no charge & all the photos are in the public domain.
