WWI & WWII searchable Lists
« on: Tuesday 08 June 04 01:00 BST (UK) »
Could anyone point me in the direction of any online, searchable lists of British Soldiers for the above wars??  Not just one that tells of those killed in action, but one that tells just who was enlisted?? Like the Australian Nominal Roll??

Hoping someone can help.

Hi gillie,

http://websites.uk-plc.net/Army_Ancestral_Searches/index.htm

specialise exclusively in research of the service record and personal background of soldiers who served in the British Army Regular Regiments, Home Based Militias and various other regiments raised from time to time in North America, India, Germany etc. Using specialist knowledge, our research will also establish whether your ancestor was present at any of the historic campaigns listed below and will frequently provide other incidental material towards a profile of the man.Soldiers Records - PRO Kew 1760 to 1920 [covers the ww1]
Service Records - Locations - Pensions Records-
Musters - Campaign Medals - Casualties

:)i have the Essex Militia Essex Regiment Militia Attestation Index 1886 - 1910
Lists the documents of about 12,500 men[if he was Essex based i can do a look-up]

theres quite a few other indexes you can buy:[unless sks already has them]:
PRE ww1:Militia Musters 1781 - 83 (WO 13) by Liz Hore & Stuart Tamblin also Various Dates & Regiments by Jennifer Edmunds
Following the Militia Act of 1757, lists of eligible men in each parish (known as militia ballot lists) were kept and from these, the men actually chosen appeared in the militia lists which are often th be found in county record offices. At the Public Record Office however, are to be found the muster and pay lists. These indexes, therefore record the men actually serving and give detail for each of the musters

you could take a look here:-
http://www.jenlibrary.u-net.com/fiche/military.htm

http://www.regiments.org/milhist/uk/lists/bargxref.htm
is an excellent site

for foreign soldiers:, http://members.tripod.com/~records_searcher/
or http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/military.html
have searchable records. [there maybe a link there for English records]

Also, you could explore the holdings of the PRO,www.pro.gov.uk
http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/Infobase/Begin-Army1.htm has lots of info on how to research army ancestors.
as does http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/sli/links.htm
if he was essex based and you want a lookup, let me know.

Hi All,

Thanks a bunch for all those sites.  I will check them out later today.  I have put up several queries on this site and this is the first time I have had answers...so that makes it extra special.

It is really hard doing research in England when you are here in Oz, so online research really helps.

I have created a special web page for those who are newbies to research online and for those who are doing research on ancestors in Australia, New Zealand, Sth Africa, England and Scotland.  It is -
www.usefulwebs.netfirms.com and I shall add any of the above links if I find them useful.

All I ask, if you visit, is that you take the time to sign the guest book.

Again many thanks :-* :-* :-*

Hi Again,
Perhaps I am pushing my luck but I thought I will put up the name I am searching for and hope that someone can give me an answer, so here goes -

I am looking for Charles Jeyes/Jayes said to be of the Jeyes Fluid Family.
Said to have been the black sheep of the family and was disinherited so he forge bank notes to make money.  He went to jail for some time and then went into the army.  It is said he served in India in the Lancers and also in WWI.  I think he may have died in August 1916 as a result of gas poisoning.

He married Annie Winnall, a servant, in 1888 in Aston, Warwickshire and I believe they had up to 20 children.  By the early 1900's I think they were in Salford, Lancs.

I cannot find them on any census - 1891/1901

Hoping someone can help

http://www.worcestershireregiment.com/wr.php?main=inc/roll_honour_WW1_J has this entry
Jayes Charles 25409 Pte. d. F. & F. 13/05/1916 4th [possibly a coincidence]
