AMPHLETT surname in Worcestershire
« on: Monday 18 April 05 22:04 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
I have recently come across the AMPHLETT name used as a forename in an ancestor I am chasing up, William Amphlett Dyson, who was in the Manchester area of Lancashire in the late 18th/ early 19thC.  When searching through the freebmd site I notice that this name occurs almost exclusively in Worcestershire.
Is anyone researching this surname, or has come across it in their own trees; or might someone know of an Amphlett individual who might have migrated pre late 18thC. to the North-West of England.
A bit of a shot in the dark, I realise...
Keith

Just a rider to yesterday's posting, but on familysearch.org I discovered baptisms for both a William Dyson and a William Amphlett in Bromsgrove in the 18th century, so perhaps there is some kind of link there...

Very wide shot - there were Amphletts in Malvern Link in 1960's, this maybe an area to look at.

Thanks for taking the trouble to respond, Mike.  Every little bit of information is really welcome!  I'm going to keep my eyes peeled in this area of England now...
Very best wishes,
Keith

Hi Keith,

There were also Amphlett's in Gloucestershire in 1960/70's, migration from Worcestershire perhaps.

Thanks very much Susan and Sue,
All very interesting, particularly the bit about 8 Amphlett forenames.  How did you get hold of this...?

From website of Gloucestershire Orchard Group

(Conserves, promotes and celebrates traditional orchards in Gloucestershire)

Judge Amphlett    Named after a famous Worcestershire assize courts judge, this is a heavy cropping, early harvesting variety (of pear).

Now you've got some research to do!!

Keith

I put 'Amphlett' in as a forname in the ancestry.co.uk search engine  - came up with the 8 matches for Lancashire
