Old photo for dating restoration and identification??
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 08:13 GMT (UK) »
Please see attached photo. I have no idea where this taken but I feel England to be likely. It was in the Pattie collection and they came from Lowick in Northumberland ~ 1861. Any ideas?? The merchants name on the shop is 'Robert Murray, General Merchant'. Any idea on the dating of this one? Any restoration helpful too...thanks, Rob

Hi Rob

Is "Merchant" an English term, ie I would thought more "grocer" for England, not sure, but it doesn't sound right to me but I could be wrong, usually am!  ;D

Cheers

That type of building reminds me of towns such as Castle Douglas in the Dumfries and Galloway region of scotland.

a bit of colour
GUIDE FOR PHOTO RESTORATIONS PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SCANNER BED IS CLEAN AND SCAN AT A RESOLUTION OF 300-600 WITH THE SCALE AT 100% MINIMUM.

If you would like a coloured version, details such as hair colour , eyes and clothing etc.  if known  would be helpful to restorers

Hi

Buildings like that are all over the Borders region of Scotland.

If the Patties  were from Lowick,  the photos might well  be from the Berwickshire/Roxburghshire/Selkirkshire area. Also, you might consider North Northumberland as well.

As for a date, maybe circa 1900 - 1905 ish or maybe a bit later, depending on the woman at the back's skirt length. I can't quite see if she's standing on the step or her ankles are showing. If they're showing, then it's  around 1912-1914  :-\

JL

PS - Cazza,  General Merchant was a common name for shopkeepers who sold most things. I think the term gradually fell from use in the 1940s-50s but it  can  still be  seen today  ;D

1901 census RG13-4848 Folio 97
Main Street, Lowick
Robert MURRAY Head M 65 General Merchant NBL Ford
Jane I do Wife M 53 NBL do
Next house is Thomas PRINGLE Draper & Shoe Dealer

In 1911 Jane Isabella is a widow aged 64 Shopkeeper China-Ware born NBL Lowick Beal living with her Niece Annie E FORMAN Single age 18 born NBL Norham.
It is s two room house with the address as Lowick Beal Northumberland. Later crossed out it said Jane was married for 39 years and had 1 child who had died.
Neighbours were a Plasterer and a Quarryman. After the Quarryman is Stephen Smith MOLE Grocer and then Ann MINNIE Grocer & Draper then Mary HOGG Saddlery Business etc

This is probably the death of Robert from FreeBMD
Deaths Mar 1906
Murray Robert 70 Glendale 10b 307

Based on location of the White Swan Inn being six houses away in 1901 I think this is where the shop used to be. The house still standing is the one on the right of the photo. Might be wrong of course.

Agree with JustLooking's date...about 1900 or a few years later. She's standing on the step :)
