I know this post was some time ago, but I, too, have a great-grandfather named Bartholomew Cronin, born in Ireland, emigrated to Canada in the late 1880s and became Chief Inspector of Police in Toronto. His son (my grandfather), James Francis Cronin, served in WWI, then came to America and was one of the founding members of Fanny Farmer Candy Company with Frank O'Connor. It's a stretch to think they were the same person, but have you found out anything else about your great-grandfather?

Hi, I'm a Cronin descendant but my Cronins are from Co. Cork, and they were farmers.

Canadian immigration papers say my great-grandfather came from Cork, but since that was a departure point for many emigres, I wasn't sure if that was where he was actually from, or if that's all that showed up. Did any of your family go into law enforcement? I think they were farmers when they were in Ireland. I don't really know very much about the family on that side of the pond at all. I would love to find reference resources (besides Ancestry.com).
