East India Pensioner
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 15:34 GMT (UK) »
Have just received a death certificate for my 3 x Gt Grandfather who died in 1839 aged 55.  His occupation is given as an East India Pensioner.

Please can anyone give me any information as to what it means and how I can research it?

Thank you.

Hello Trevor

Thanks so much for the prompt reply.  I hadn't thought of  the East India trading company - I was thinking more on the lines of the army!

His details; George Rushworth aged 55 died March 9 1839 in Worsbrough, Barnsley occupation East India Pensioner.

I will look up the company on wikipedia as you suggest.

Thanks again

Mary

May I join in please?

I have Martha Wright b 1798, widow of Edward Wright, who in 1861 is in receipt of a East India Pension (Civil Service).  I cannot find them in earlier censuses. so 'suspect' they may be abroad.  In 1861 she is living with her son and his family in England.

Not sure where to look for more information about them.  Can sks point me in a useful direction?

Thanks.

Just for completeness - thanks to the wonderful East India Company Records at the British Library and a great archivist there - I have discovered she had split from her husband Edward in mid 1820's, he had gone off to start up another family.  The EIC Pension Records were very definitive re this!
