William Dexter Swann
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 21:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi, looking for any information on the Swann family in Rutland
William was born about 1817, in Barrowden, Rutland according to the 1861
Census for England. He was living around Holbeach, Lincolnshire at that time.
William married Elizabeth Jacklin (Gott),on 3 Aug 1841, Holbeach and than a
Mary Abigale Bowers in 1852, Holbeach.

I would like to find his Birth/Christening which might lead me to finding out
who his parents are. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi

If you can't find a baptism perhaps some one could look up the marriage in 1841 :)

father would be on there. Did you get the marriage from familysearch?

Notice the bride's father is named on the 1841 marriage on Familysearch but not groom.
Could be William is illegitimate?

Found some one else tracing William (put name in Google) believes he married a Caroline Dennice/Dennick in Holbeach in 1867.

I'm sure you have thought that his father may have been surnamed Dexter, perhaps it would be worth looking to see if any bastardy records survive for Barrowden

Hi, yes that was his third marriage.
Where do you find these records (bastardy records survive for Barrowden )
Dexter also could be the maiden name of mother,
Who was looking William and Caroline?

Those type of records are usually kept by the local county records office. If you're lucky they may have indexed them.  Examples of the records can be found on the National Archives site. look under bastardy examinations and orders

If you search William Dexter Swann in Google a couple of interested parties come up :)

I agree Dexter could be maternal surname. If it's a clue to an illegitimate birth the father's name is the one usually placed in the middle, though i'm sure there are others on this site who have had the opposite ;D
It might however be nothing to do with paternity but a middle name used for a completely different purpose... that's what I love about family history!

I have lots of Dexters and there is a marriage of William Dexter to Mary Swan in Barrowden 29/1/1816 so ties in with the birth of William in 1817 - source IGI & Pa reg.
Unfortunately dont have a Wm b 1817 anywhere.
Might be able to help with more Dexters if necessary.
Happy hunting.
