Germany/Prussia help!
« on: Tuesday 19 April 05 10:50 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm doing a surprise "tree" for a friend's big birthday, wouldn't you know it two of his ancestors are from Germany/Prussia.
Anyone any idea of the BMD tracing in Germany? Is there a similar system to ours? How would I go about tracking them down?
Cord Henke married Caroline Wilhemine Emilie Lunser (sometimes Lanser) 1867, from Marriage certificate received yesterday, father of Cord is Heinrich Henke, Farmer and Caroline's - Johann Lunser Farm Labourer

Cord Henke in 1871 census in Billingsgate London
Cord Henke, Head, Mar, age 27, Occupation - Tailor, born Germany
Caroline Henke, Wife, Mar, age 26, Tailor, b Germany
in 1881 they are in Birmingham
Cord Henke, Head, Mar,  Male, age 37, b c1844,  Occupation Tailor, b Germany (British Subject)
Caroline Henke, Wife, Mar, 36,b c 1845, Tailoress, b Germany, (British Subject)
and in 1891 back Mile End Old Town London
Cord Henke, Head, M, 47, Tailor, Employed, b Hanover
Caroline Henke, Wife, M, 46, Tailoress, Employed, b Prussia

Appreciate any help
Newbie

Hi Newbie

There are some naturalisation papers at the National Archives in Kew for some HENKEs - search their catalogue (procat) for the word ........... henke ................. with series code ......... HO

http://www.pro.gov.uk

Best wishes

Thanks Casalguidi,
is it possible to do online? I've tried without success, found the catalogue, HO and then the series HO1 and HO5 but can't search for Henke ? Tried but no luck.

Hi Newbie,

try this out:

click on casalguidi's link, this takes you to the new address for TNA
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

click on "Search our Collections"
click on "PROCAT"
click on "Search the Catalogue"
enter henke in  "word or phrase"
click "search"
you should then get 16 results, so look for yours there  :)

Yes to the first part, and to the second part: In a word, No !

look on the Immigrants board "Sharing useful tips: Germany ...", "Sharing useful links: Germany ..." and any threads with naturalisation in the title.
The first stop is the naturalisation papers, as we need a place name in Germany before we can (usefully) search further i.e. GEDBAS, etc.

Good luck,
Bob

Thanks Bob,
I was trying to do it in a more difficult way! thought I had to use the reference first not just Henke - oops. you are a star.
Found two that could be  mine, Otto and Henry(Heinrich) both naturalised after 1910 so papers are closed under the 100 year rule. They are sons of Cord and Caroline. Although both born here so wouldn't need "naturalisation". maybe not mine then. No sign of Cord or Caroline

Cord in one of the censuses gave his birth address as Hanover is that enough to find him?
Thanks Newbie

I notice a Conrad in the TNA lists.  Cord = Conrad ??

Hannover is a good start, try the GEDBAS site: http://gedbas.genealogy.net/index.jsp

with henke in Nachname and click on Suchen and look for Hannover (in the federal state of Niedersachsen = Lower Saxony)

at the bottom of each page is weiter = continue and (after the first page) zurück = back

Interesting: there are two Cordt HENKEs listed, but no further details.
Cordt is pronounced Cort but after a few years in England, I could well imagine it becoming Cord

Thank you very much,

ps Bob, is the site the official site or is it the same as FreeBMD - transcribed by volunteers and possibly not complete? Is it reliable information?
Thanks again
