Marshall Family
« on: Tuesday 19 April 05 21:12 BST (UK) »
I am researching my Marshall Family from 1700-1900 in the East Riding of Yorkshire.   Can anyone tell me if they recognize any of these individuals from my tree?

Thomas Marshall born 1823 South Cliffe (hand written family notes indicate he married an Everingham)  Thomas's parents were Anthony Marshall and Isabella Staveley, I am looking for Thomas's descendants and spouse.

Anthony Marshall born 1812 North Cave married Frances (Smith?) of Howden.  Anthony's parents were also Anthony Marshall and Isabella Staveley.  Looking for Anthony Jr.s descendants and spouse information.

Isabella Staveley -  she married Anthony Marshall (born 1776) of North Newbald. They were married in 1801 -   trying to determine who her parents were.

Anthony Marshall -  he was born about 1709 in Skeffling and was married twice - #1 Anne Matthews (married in Holmpton)  she died in 1763   #2 Elizabeth Allen (married in Owethorne) I am looking for Anthony's parents who I suspect may have been named William and Alice Marshall.

I would love to hear from anyone researching the East Riding Marshall family from these areas and time periods:

Skeffling - 1700-1780
North Newbald - 1740-1800
South Cliffe/North Cliffe - 1800-1900
North Cave - 1780-1900
Market Weighton - 1800-1880
Brantingham - 1760-1800
Swanland - 1760-1880
North Ferriby - 1760-1880
Hull - 1830-1880

Thanks!
Sondra Marshall

Hello, I don't recognise the names you are looking for.

However I noticed you are interested in Marshalls from Market Weighton. One of my ancestors was Frances Marshall from Market Weighton. b c1820, d 10 Apr 1906. Frances married a William Hudson in Market Weighton on 11 Nov 1839.

I believe Frances' parents were John and Mary(nee Holmes?) Marshall m 1820 but have not got any more information.
Names: Ayer, Whistance, Medforth & Wilson.
Areas: East Riding of Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Middlesex/London, UK.

Hi,

I have some of the names you mention in my family tree, Anthony Marshall and Isabella Staveley in particular. When I get home I'll have a look and post back here with more details.

I'll post a link later.

Hi

Anthony Marshall b.1782 m. Isabella Staveley b.1779

Children:

Ann b.1803, Alice b.1805, Isabella b.1807, Jane b.1809
Anthony b.1813 (my line)
Sally b.1814, Sarah b.1815, Elizabeth b.1817, Grace b.1820, Thomas b.1823, Hannah b.1826, John b.1830

It would seem that Isabella was Anthony's 2nd wife and was previously married to Ann Halliday and had a daughter Mary, the marriage taking place in 1797.

His parents were Anthony Marshall b.1742 and Ann Purden b.1744.

Isabella Staveley's parents were William Staveley b.1754 and Heinrietta Henderson.

All the above carries a health warning as I have not yet been able to confirm the details to any records, the info has been supplied to me via other ancestry members family trees.

So Anthony Marshall c.1813 m. Frances Smith (1817 - 1881). Anthony appears on the census 1841 to 1881. He is a Cordwainer sometimes descibed as a master cordwainer which is a shoemaker. On the 1851  and 1861 census he has servants / apprentices living with him so must have been doing okay!

He seems to appear on the 1891 census in North Newbald, age 80 staying with his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Edward Wilde -so I'm not sure about his year of death.

My line is followed through his son Anthony Marshall b.1845 who married Eliza Andesron 25/12/1865. They had a son Sinclair Marshall. He married Mary Barritt/Burritt and they had a daughter Nellie Marshall 20 May 1889.

Nellie would be my Great Grandmother.

Nellie married Robert Burrell 1/12/1906 and they lived in York. Their daughter Beatrice was born 27/06/1908 is my grandparent.

There are a number of people on ancestry with the Marshalls in their tree, might be worth taking up the 2 week trail.

Contact me by PM if you like.

Hi SKMarshall, I too have a Marshall in my tree, and have very little info: on the family. Do you happen to have come across a Charlotte Marshall chr. 26-12-1782 St. James. Sutton. Her father was Andrew Marshall, no name for her mother. I have wondered where Andrew came from, the only one I have found so far has been in Stokesley. Nrth Yorks. But I cannot be sure that it is the same Andrew.
Charlotte married Daniel Wilson 13-10-1801. Hull.
Daniel was a "Baker" by trade.
Can anyone help me please.

These are direct matches to the Thomas Marshall on my tree.  Until now I was missing his wife's full name.  There are so many Thomas Marshall's out there it's hard to tell which one is the one I'm looking for sometimes.  The old notes I inherited from my great aunt had the name "Everington" penciled in behind Jane's name for some reason, I'm wondering if the notation was meant to indicate the place instead of a name.

"Sally" may have been a recording error, or this child died in infancy  There was a Sara Marshall (born about 1815)  and she married a William Jones from Manchester.  The Jones family also immigrated to Nebraska.  There were only two children born to the couple that I'm aware of Marshall Jones and Charles Jones.  The notes that my family has from "Sally's" one of John's children do not indicate a sibiling named Sally but they do list Sara.

Does anyone happen to know what happened to Mary, Elizabeth and Anne?  I suspect Mary may have died as a young child she was Anthony and Anne Halliday's only daughter.  Family notes indicate that Elizabeth may have married an unrelated John Marshall (if this is true then I suspect it may have been John Marshall born 1819 in Lockington).  I can't  find any indiction of what happened to Anne.

Unfortunately I do not recognize any of these names or the location.  The Marshall's on my tree seem to be exclusively from the North Newbald, Market Weighton, Beverly and Sculcoates area in the late 1700's.
