Orr of Creavery
« on: Monday 28 February 11 19:20 GMT (UK) »
This is my first post here so I'm sorry if I don't get it right. I'm looking for information on the following Orr family. They lived near Creavery and we believe they attended the First Presbyterian Church at Connor. Half of the family emigrated to the USA in the 1850s to Thompsonville, CT and then moved West to Jones County, Iowa. I'd like any information on the following people or their ancestors & descendants: William & Jane Orr, parents of 11 known children.
1)Mary Agnes Orr b.6 NOV 1810, d. 4 APR 1879 md. John Dennison.
2)William Orr, b. 22 NOV 1812.
3)John Orr b.15 APR 1815 d. 27 MAR 1900 Co Antrim md. Mary Kirkpatrick.
4)Margaret Orr b. 9 OCT 1817 d.Co Antrim md. Alexander Fletcher
5)Jane Orr b. 9(19?)APR 1820 d.6 APR 1885 Jones Co, IA, USA md. Robert Young
6)Samuel Orr b.11 AUG 1822 d.18 MAR 1900 Co Antrim, md. Sally Groves
7)James Orr b.10 FEB 1825 d.1 OCT 1911 Jones Co, IA, USA md. Mary Murry
8)Eliza Orr b.11 APR 1827 d.1893 Co Antrim md. John Agnew
9)David Hamilton Orr b.11 JUL 1829 d.19 APR 1908 Jones Co, IA, USA md. Mary Allison
10)Sarah Orr b.18 JUL 1833 d.4 DEC 1922 Jones Co, IA, USA md. Samuel Orr
11)Jemima (Mina) Orr b.10 AUG 1835 d.18 MAR 1921 Jones Co, IA, USA md. William Orr

John Orr’s will is on the PRONI website. He was a farmer in Creavery:

http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearchResults.aspx

It mentions a son Samuel Orr of Dunsilly, dau Margaret Cooper (?), her dau Sarah and his wife Mary.

You will also find Samuel Orr’s will too. (Another farmer in Creavery). He leaves his farm to his son.

Don't know if this thread is still going, but I am a descendant of Sarah Orr, who married Samuel Orr.  They are both buried in the Clay Township cemetery near Onslow (population about 125) in Jones County, Iowa.  I think all of the people buried in that cemetery are Orrs and their relations.  I have been there a couple of times.

Don't know where you're from, but Iowa has a lot of records posted on-line, so is very genealogist friendly.

Information on the Creavery Orr  family is included in a book published this year by Roger Orr titled
Weavers and Watchmakers A family Narrative. Roger posted information on his book in the Mid Antrim genealogy group site.  "a narrative history of the Orr family based on Alexander Orr and Margaret Kyle of Tullygarley, near Ballymena."

There are links between the Creavery Orrs and my Dunsilly Gawn and Millar families but I have not researched the Orrs and only have a few bits of information. One branch of Millars lived at Creavery House in about the 1930s.  Roger Orr is related to that Millar family.

Mary Kirkpatrick who married John Orr b1815 d 1900, was a widow previously married to a James Kennedy of Lisnevenagh. My gt grandmother's sister Annie Gawn of Dunsilly married in 1898 to a grandson of James Kennedy and Mary Kirkpatrick.

Cheers

One other piece of information that I just discovered I have is that the Jane Orr, wife of William and mother of the 11 children in the original post, was Jane Halliday.

Cheers

Linda.
