McCann Millar Family
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 13:45 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my great grandmother Wilhelmina Millar born c.1870, grew up in Armagh/Belfast.  We have been unable to trace a birth certificate.  One family story runs that she came to Ireland as a child from Germany and the family name was originally Muller.  This may explain the absence of a birth certificate in Ireland.  Without a birth certificate, however, we are finding it hard to find out more about her family origins.

We do know that she married my great grandfather Patrick McCann in 1889 in Belfast. We have a marriage certificate from St Mary's in Belfast but no civil certificate.  Patrick was an RIC officer and the couple lived in Belfast for a few years.  The RIC record states little more than when they were married and gives Wilhemina's native county as Armagh.

We also have a copy of her birthday book but this provides few clues to her family names.

Can anyone suggest any other avenues we might explore to find out more about Wilhelmina's early life ?

A more technical query: St. Mary's (Chapel Lane) (where Wilhelmina married) has a record of marriages Feb 18th 1867 - Dec. 27, 1880. (Under that it has a notation NLI Pos. 5471.  Does that mean anything to anybody?)

I just checked the IGI on the familysearch website and came up with these:

Wilhelmina Millar born 20 SEP 1876       Belfast, Antrim, Ireland to John Millar and Lizzie Millar McDowell

WILLHEMINA KENNEDY MILLAR born 02 FEB 1867       Clady District, Londonderry, Ireland to Alexander Millar and Rachel Kennedy

Thanks Sharon - how kind of you to go and look.  We did see these before but doubt that they are our Wilhelmina.  Our one was born 19th September, c1870.
But thanks so much anyway !

hi Audrey

Yes I just recently had a look at the BVRI and noticed the unnamed miller children. I don't recall seeing anything that linked in but I'll revisit that

Thanks !
