Is lodging house same as poorhouse?

Hi,

I came accross the death of Thomas Matson, who lived at the Lodging House at 77 Drygate Street in Barony Glasgow in 1927.

I wonder whether this was a poorhouse, or a real lodging house. Does anyone know?

A lodging house would provide basic food and shelter often for itinerant workers.

The poor house was just that a home for the poor when workhouses were phased out.

Poorhouse was the Scottish equivalent of the English term workhouse.
A lodging house was, as Emjaybee pointed out, a "Boarding House", very basic and not always very clean. Glasgow Corporation (now Glasgow City Council) ran many "Model Lodging Houses" mostly for men but there were a few for women.
The one in the Drygate many have been a "Model" as they were known, I'm not too sure.

Glasgow Post office street directory for 1933 shows 77 Drygate  C4 as "Model Lodging House".  Wm Jardine (living at 85 Drygate) is listed as the "Superintendant Drygate Home"  at 77 Drygate.

There is still a Model Lodging House on the Gallowgate as far as I know, just before you get to The Barrows.

Thank you guys, I loved the pictures.

I did think that Thomas may not have been very well off. He was 75 years old when he died and he was a shoemaker, although I'm not sure if he was still working.

Mind you, I can easily see myself in one of those in years to come if things keep going the way they are and of course we'll all still be working our socks of at the tender age of 75

I would be interested to find out when these "Model / Boarding Houses" ceased .

I remember my mum mentioning gents from "the model" in Mossend, coming around the doors selling matches. This would have been around 1954-1960.
