Norfolk Gypsy's name Dack ?

Hi

My father, who had  lived in N Elmham, Norfolk, during WWI, used to talk about the time he spent with the Gypsys, and mentioned that we are related to the Dack family, whom I understood to be Gypsys.  They may have married into the Reynolds family.  I would be pleased if anyone can shed light on this.

If you try the Search and Surname buttons, you will find a number of posts regarding the
Dack name, and several people who have expressed a research interest in it.

Note also there is a board here for travelling people, and somebody there may have some
knowledge, even if they are not specifically researching the name.

Reynolds    for a marriage you will see a number of possibles...but one of the early ones looks good

My great grandmother was a Dack from Felthorpe. Her children (my grandmother and her sisters often used to talk about being descended from a family of gypsies called Dack.
The weird thing though is that the Dacks can be traced for generations in the Felthorpe and Hunworth parish registers, so if they were gypsies they must have been very settled. For what it's worth family photographs do show they were dark skinned and dark haired.

Dack is a new one on me. I just checked The Book Of Bob (Click the little house under my avatar) and it's not listed in there.

Got a Dacker, sitting right behind me, waiting to fed. But, that's a whole 'nother story 

Reynolds is recorded as being given by Gypsys. Essex, Kent ..... Not a million miles from Norfolk then? Interesting that the 'family legend' mentions them, specifically.

As I'm always at pains to point out; Bob doesn't claim his listings to be the last, exhaustive word. I know, for a personal fact, of people he's missed. Not everyone was even pleased to let it be known they were Gypsys.

Anyway, it's never a good idea to start with a theory and set out to prove it. Not in Genealogy. Just do a steady finger tip search, back from yeself, and ye'll reveal what ever's there

I am descended from Dacks in Norfolk, they lived in Shipdham primarily. As far as I am aware, they were not a gypsy family, although one branch emigrated to America and joined the Mormon church.

Sarah Ann Langley married Emmanuel Doek (Dutch) in 1860 in Holkham, Norfolk. Her existing daughter took the name "Dack" and this is how the family was recorded subsequently.
