Application Needed to Travel to NY from England in 1902?
« on: Sunday 13 March 11 18:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have a great grandmother traveling from Leeds to NY in 1902.  Would she have had to obtain a passport?  Would there be any record of this?  I will be traveling to England in June and would love to look up any information on my relatives who lived in Leeds from 1848-1924+
Thank you for any suggestions.
Mary

My understanding is that she would not have needed a passport or any advance paperwork from the US authorities. These requirements only came in around 1914 (with the start of the First World War).

Thank you!  I was hoping there is some paperwork needed on England's side.

According to this article passports were only introduced in Britain in 1914.

How nice of you to offer.  I have her passenger list from Ancestry.  She came over from Liverpool to NY in 1902.
Her name was Bridget Byron - Aug. 14, 1902 arrival date.  Returned to England on the Campania on Dec 13, 1902.

I also have my great grandmother's passport from her 1922 voyage.  Would there be an archive on the application of this passport?  It was done at the branch office in Liverpool.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be very surprised if the records from 1922 still exist. However you could e-mail the Passport Office and ask them.
