Gilroes Cemetery, Leicester
« on: Monday 14 March 11 13:03 GMT (UK) »
I have unearthed a plot number that I think refers to Gilroes. Before I set off to look for it, can anyone tell me if maps are available at the cemetery or how to locate the plot? I understand it is a huge place?
This relly was originally buried in a Churchyard but an aged aunt says she remembers him being dug up and moved when the Churchyard got full - is this likely?

Also, is there parking for visitors not attending funerals?

Hi Ramekin,
This is a photo I took of the map at Gilroes Cemetery, which I hope is of some use. The plot areas are given and if you know the plot number you can probably work out the location as they are in a logical fashion. Leicester City Council 0116 252 7382 are the only holders of the plot records and they charge to search but presumably they could explain the plot numbering system or if yours is in Gilroes.
It is a large cemetery but there is no office there, you must use the number above. There is parking along the road and near the plot areas in some cases if I remember.
Hope this is helpful

Hi Gerry
Many thanks - your photo is very useful and it looks as though I won't have far to walk to find the section I need
Cheers, ramekin

Greeting’s & Welcome. …Ramekin.

Along with the Section & Plot No’. did you also get the location details?
Which would sound like ……Section M ......9 North….19 East.

If so once you have located your section area
You need to find a wooden marker.
This is were to start from.

North directions :~

Stand by the marker looking in a Northern direction.
Start your count of the North directions on your right hand side = No’. 1
No’ 2 is the same row but on your Left hand side..
No’. 3. is the next row up on your Right hand side
No’. 4 same row but on your Left hand side.
Continue till you reach No’ 9.

East. :~

Now count off the plots going in an eastern direction.

Sounds complicated at first…….

Some of the headstones have the plot No’. either on the back or down to wards the bottom of the headstone. ……

If all fails look for Cemetery workers and ask them…..

Good Luck. ...

MIKE. ….

Hi Mike
Ouch! Sounds like I was being overly optimistic about not having far to walk. Could be I'll need compass, flask & sarnies - all I have is "V462". Are they all North & East or do they have South & West too? If logic applies I assume that it would be Section V Row 4 Plot 62 that I'm looking for.
Many thanks for such detailed info
Ramekin

Hi Ramekin,
As your plot number is a V you only need to walk up from the main entrance a little way and it will be on your right.
The V section doesn't look that big, so hopefully you'll find your plot easily.
Regards,
Fairy Queen   :)

Hi Fairy Queen
I have already visited and you're right, Section V is easy to find and isn't very big. Unfortunately there are quite a few unmarked graves and many totally unreadable memorials so I haven't actually been able to find my relly's grave....but at least I tried.
Thank you & regards
Ramekin

Hello,

You might want to look into visiting the Leicestershire And Rutland Family History Society at Pilot House. You can join as a member or maybe visit as a guest ?  No 0116 285 7211
They have the plot no's and maps on CD for research purposes.

Hi Mak

I can see that you are new to this forum so welcome from another Leicestershire searcher.

Just to add that the dates when posts are made are at the top of each post. The ones you replied to are now 6 years old so I'm guessing that the original poster may have sorted things by now.
