I searched the Irish 1901 and the 1911 census but I think they are gone from Boley by that time

There is one Phelan family in the 1901 census that nearly matches my Phelans

The fathers name is correct
The mother is correct
The oldest son is correct

the father, who is 93 in 1901 census, has 22 and 26 year old daughters, both of the who's christian names I don't recognise, I just may not have found these girls in the records yet.

There were quite a few Phelan's in Boley in earlier times according the Griffiths Valuation.

I read the other day that there were only around 100 christian names used in Ireland, when you combine that in a place like Laois where every other person is a Phelan or a Delaney etc finding the right person is difficult :(

William Phelan-b.1868 is in the Irish Civil Register, with parents, Michael & Catherine Gafney,

Perhaps some others are there also, if born after 1864.

another possible child for Michael & Catherine located using the free index with a parent match on RootsIreland pay-website - an Eliza or Elizabeth baptised in 1865 in Abbeyleix RC parish. There also appears to be civil birth transcript for her. The date means that her parents could possibly have married before the start of civil registration of RC marriages.

The extracted civil records on FamilySearch are not complete so gaps are to be expected, and they only cover up to 1880 or 1881, so there could also be children after the twins.
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)
