Possible Mormon immigrants - Wales to USA
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 16:48 GMT (UK) »
If anyone can help on this I'd be very grateful.  I am looking for the family of David and Elizabeth Jones, as below, where they are shown on the UK census return for 1851.

Census in Wales, UK
Rhydfelin 1851

David Jones       HD.  38  Boatman    Glam. Llantrisant
Elizabeth Jones  W.  40 --------------  Glam. Cefncoed Cymmer
Evan Jones         S.   14  Boatman     Glam Eglwsilan
Mary Ann Jones   D.  12 -------------       Ditto
David Jones         S.    8 --------------      Ditto
Thomas Jones      S.    6 ---------------    Ditto
William Jones        S.    4   -------------    Ditto
Rachel  Jones        D.    2 --------------     Ditto

In the next census, 1861, the family is reduced in number. Evan, the eldest son, has married, and only William of the children in the 1851 census is livinng with them, although there have been 2 later additions, children of David and Elizabeth, Mormon b1853 and Claudia b1857.

UK Census, Wales, 1861
Living at  Chapel Row Rhydfelin.

Evan Jones             HD.  23 Boatman      Glam  Eglwsilan
Rosannah Jones      W.    22.................   Bristol
William Jones           BR.   15  Boatboy     Glam Eglwsilan
Mormon Jones          BR.    8    Scholar      ditto
Chlaudia  Jones        CI. ?  4 Scholar         ditto

I have been unable to trace David and Elizabeth + children in any subsequent Uk censuses.  Family legend has it they they went to USA c1861 as Mormon converts but I am finding it hard to substantiate this.

Evan Jones, above, later emigrated to Scranton, Penn as did Mormon and family. Mormon returned to Wales after a few years.

I would be very glad for any help as I am a bit lost. Thanks to Bethan on the Wales rootscat forum for her helping me  find the family there.

Hello Maxdog,

http://castlegarden.org/searcher.php  gives some earlier passenger records (with limited information)

Thomas Jones appears to be with Evan and Rosanna on the 1880 US Census in Kingston, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.

Evan Jones 45 Born Wales. Miner.
Rosanna Jones 42 Born England
Evan Jones 9 Born Wales.
Thomas Jones 38 Born Wales. Brother. Miner.

Evan & Family are in Pennsylvania by the 1870 Census

Looking at Claudia Jones and Evan Jones they appear to be the children of Evan Jones and Rosanna Davies in the GRO.

JONES, CLAUDIA       DAVIES
GRO Reference: 1855  S Quarter in CARDIFF  Volume 11A  Page 195

JONES, EVAN       DAVIES
GRO Reference: 1869  M Quarter in NEWCASTLE IN EMLYN  Volume 11B  Page 20

Could be wrong what do you make Rosanna's maiden name to be?

Could be Rosanna's birth:
DAVIES, ROSANNA       -
GRO Reference: 1839  S Quarter in MADELEY  Volume 18  Page 92

(Madeley, Shropshire is very near to Wales, where is the border?)
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)
