Richard Thomas/Jane Jenkins m. 1886 LLANELY
« on: Friday 18 March 11 00:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello from Boston!

I am looking for any information on Richard Thomas and Jane Jenkins,
recorded in the Oct - Dec 1886 Marriage Index, Vol 11a pg 1214.
They emigrated from Llanely to PA, USA in 1887 and were living in
Yorkville Borough, Skuylkill, PA, USA by 1900.

I believe Richard (possibly David Richard) was born in Oct 1856-8,
Jane was born in Jan 1868 (this from US census data).
Children in US: Thomas, Mar 1887; David O, Sep 1888, etc.

I am interested in any info, including ancestors for each.  Many thanks!!

-K-

Hello and a warm welcome to Rootschat!  ;D

Do you have a copy of the 1886 marriage cert to confirm names & occupations of both fathers?

You can get a copy from the GRO

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

There are several possible Davids of around the right age, only 1 David R but he is in Carmarthen. There is this possible Richard but without details of father, it's guesswork

1861 Caeperson bach, Llanelly RG9/4113 folio 38 pg 12
John Thomas head mar 49 formerly smelter
Jane wife 40 b. Llanddarog
John son 18 labourer in copper works
William son 14 mason's labourer
Evan son 11 potter
Mary dau 7
Richard son 3
all born Llanelly apart from Jane

1871 5 Oxen St, Llanelly Rg10/5467 folio 18 pg 27
Jane Thomas head widow 51 housekeeper b. Llanddarog
William son 24 coal miner
Evan son 19 puddler at tinplate works
Mary dau 18 opening plates at tinplate works
Richard son 13 pickling at copper mill
all born Llanelly apart from Jane

Possible for Jane in 1881
5 Cemi, Hengoed, Llanelly RG11/5375 folio 98 pg 20
Thomas Jenkins head mar 46 colliery carpenter b. Llanedy
Ann wife 46
William son 21 coal miner b. Glam, Llan... (?)
Rhys son 19 labourer on railway
Robert son 15 smith at colliery
Jane dau 13
James son 12
John son 9
Margaret Ann dau 7
Gomer son 2
all born Llanelly except where otherwise stated

But as said before, you really need the marriage cert to be sure you're following the right people.

Thank you for your advice.

I ordered the marriage certificate; it should be here in some weeks...
The family story is that Richard was a miner in the US, but I cannot verify
this as the 1890 US census was destroyed and the earliest record I have
for him is 1900.

Would it be bad form to cross-post this request under "Thomas/Jenkins
m. 1886" in case there are Jenkins researchers out there?  I'd identify
it as a duplicate of this thread, of course...

Thanks again, -K-

you could just change the title of this thread. Duplicate posts have been known to annoy some people.  Have you put your names in the surname interest table - under surnames on front page of site?

Post the details from the marriage cert on this thread when it arrives, including the names of witnesses as these can help.

Any additional information that you can provide re: ancestry for these
individuals would be greatly appreciated.  Based on the above, I
believe Richard's birthdate would have been Oct 1860-1 and Jane's
was Jan 1868.

I'd be happy to reciprocate with info from this side of the pond if I can.

Regards, -K-

osprey,

Many thanks.  I found a photo online:
http://llanelli-history.co.uk/pubs_oddfellows.htm

It's odd that Ann is listed in 1891 as "Ann Thomas"
and that the oldest daughter living with her is also
called Thomas while the others are Jenkins.  There
seem to be additional connections between the Thomas
and Jenkins families.  The addresses for Richard and
Jane appear to be but 2-3 blocks apart.

Thanks, -K-
