The William born 1883 was the son of Meredith and Margaret Hardie who were married 30th Dec 1876 in the Free Church at Harthill, Lanarkshire.  William Colligan married Sarah McKelvie 1911 in Shotts.    A William Colligan married Margaretta Armstrong in Uphall in 1917.  Can only find two deaths for a William Colligan born bet 1850 - 1855 - on in Holytown in 1881 aged 27, so not yours and one in Morningside, Edinburgh in 1931 aged 79 - this one would be the most likely, as some folk in hospital in Edinburgh had their deaths registered in the area of the hospital and not their home parish.

Definately a must to check some certs, but hope this cuts down your search time.
