Islandmagee Hoy's and McLernon's
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 04:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for information on the Hoy (Hoey) family of Islandmagee. My gggrandfather Joseph was born at Cloghfin to a James Hoy and Jane Reid. He was a mariner and lost at sea in 1880. His brother Samuel went to Dunedin in NZ and his other brother William came to Australia.
I am looking for the death of his wife Mary Isabel McLernon (or McClernan) daughter of William McLernon and Margaret McAllister.
What is the best way to proceed with looking for these death/cemetery records?

Thanks

James Hoy’s will is on the PRONI website. Sons Joseph, Samuel & Wm are mentioned, as are also daughters Isabella, Agnes, & Lizzie and a son apparently named Moore Getty (hard to read).

http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearchResults.aspx

Abstract: The Will of James Hoy late of Portdavey Islandmagee County Antrim Farmer deceased who died 14 July 1880 at same place was proved at Belfast by William M'Keen of Castlechester and John Donnan Junior of Broadisland both in said County Farmers the Executors.

Thank you so much.
Steve - I thought he died in 1880?? How do I find the 1883 info, his wife didn't remarry and she is on the 1901 census living with her daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Jane in Castletown, Islandmagee. She is not on the 1911 census. Mary went to NZ to marry a Sweeny and the two girls are still living at the same house.

Thanks for the will information. I had found that record but I didn't realise you could see the image!! Amazing.. Yes, Moore Getty was another brother. He was also presumed drowned at sea, I'm not sure when or even how to search for this. Any suggestions?

Once again, thanks
Jo

Thank you, I finally found them. Joseph and Moore Getty died on the same day, on the same ship.

Jrosie

I believe there was a brother John lost at sea in 1880
and the family could be buried at Templecorran Barrycarry.

The deaths were mentioned in the Larne Weekly Reporter(feb 1884)

Thanks Steve,
There was a brother John Curry Hoy, left South Africa in 1875 and never heard from again apparently. Am I able to access records from the Larne Weekly Reporter?

I did find the record for James Hoy and the John above at the Templecorran Graveyard search. Seems John died in July 1875 at sea.

Cheers
