St Helier
« on: Thursday 21 April 05 22:02 BST (UK) »
Orlando John Bowden was born 1852 Little Peter Street, St Helier.  He appears to have been the third child of John and Edith Bowden. The 1851 census (checked some years ago) shows this couple with two other children Horatio aged 2 (who was born in Cornwall) and Caroline aged 6 months (born St Helier).
Father John Bowden was born in St Helier around 1828, and mother Edith nee Treganza in Cornwall; they married June 1847 in St Helier, and must have returned to Cornwall for the birth of Horatio.  John gives his father's name as John Bowden on his marriage certificate, and his father's occupation as lawyer.
I would like to trace John's baptism in St Helier, and also see if John and Edith appear on the 1861 census.

Update on this - John found on the 1861 census having moved to Middlesex!
No Edith - I think she may well have died and possibly in Middlesex since their youngest child appears to have been born there.  That's my next task!!

Still interested in finding John's baptism though ....... ;)

Further update - John may be the son of John and Rebecca Bowden, baptised 15 March 1828, St Helier.  I would be interested in any further children of this couple - or their marriage.

Hi -

Did you find any other baptisms for this family?

I can confirm the following -

15.3.1828  John son of John Bowden and Rebecca, his wife
(godparents: William Walters and Rebeca Bowden)

AND
15.3 1829  Thomas son of John Bowden and Rebecca, his wife
(William Smith and Bridget Smith)

14.2 1836  Ann Andrew [sic] daughter of John Bowden and Rebecca, his wife
(Michael Cummins and Harriet Cummins)

I didn't find John and Rebecca's marriage in St Helier - perhaps they were married in another parish?

I hope this is useful.

Thanks Mike - that's great!

I was aware of Thomas - from another kind soul in Jersey! - but not Ann.

There appears to be another son, Richard, who appears with Rebecca and Thomas on the 1841 census in Ann Street, born c1832 - if that is the correct Ann on the census!

The same person who found Thomas for me also came across the burial of Elizabeth, daughter of John and Rebecca, in 1839 aged 17 - but did not have time to look for a suitable baptism.  Also a burial of Rebecca, widow of John, 6 December 1841, but nothing for John - who, if the Rebecca in the census is correct, would have died prior to the 1841 census.

If you feel like another hunt ........... ;) .... I would be grateful!
