William Brunton, b. 1831, Yarrow - Completed
« on: Monday 21 March 11 10:22 GMT (UK) »
I've had great difficulty tracing my ancestor William Brunton (b. 1831, Yarrow) forward past 1881. He married my g.g.aunt Agnes Orr on 6 Jun 1856 in Selkirk and they had several children, 2 of which (Agnes, 1873, and William, 1874) are buried in Brierylaw cemetary in lairs which William Brunton purchased in 1873. My grandfather and grandmother, and other ancestors are also buried in these lairs.

I can trace William Brunton forward to the 1881 census when he and his wife Agnes and their 4 remaining children were all living in Edinburgh. He was a tailor. But I can find no death records and no further census trace of William Brunton and his family. The only assumption I can make is that he emigrated, but I've found no record yet on immigration records for Australia, Canada or the USA.

Does anyone have a better idea, or have William Brunton in their ancestry?

Do you mean William was born in 1831?

As an aside there is a W Brunton, Tailor, in Rutherfurds Southern Counties Register of 1866. He lived at Market Place, Selkirk and was a registered voter. Just a bit of info.

Thanks Terry,

Yes, that's him. He was recorded on the 1871 census as being a tailor living in Market Place. He was recorded in Caledonian Terrace, Edinburgh in 1881, and then the records cease.

Did you see the death record for a William Brunton on Scotlands People?  Died 1889 aged 57 in Edinburgh City. If this one still had a birthday to come he would have been born 1831.

Thanks Terry,

Yes, I'd got that one but it's not "my" William Brunton. The one that died in 1889 was a labourer and married to a Janet Hair. Nice try but I'd already paid SP credits to get that record !!

I'm working on William Tait Brunton's brother's line - David Brunton (1826-1879) who went to Melbourne Australia in July 1854 on the "Red Jacket' and married Margaret Lonie from Cupar, Fife.

Hi pfj,

I didn't know that William had a brother David. Where did you find David? And, is there any evidence that William Brunton joined his brother David in Australia?
