Thank you all.  Will keep on searching.  Cancan is going to take another look at the stone to see if she can make out any of the missing words.

If it exists then Youngtug has found it. The Salford records etc. seem to be at Warwick.

Thanks.

Yes I had already contacted Warwick University at the suggestion of the archivist at the Peoples History Museum so when I saw the link on Youngtug's post I was really pleased, as as you said they do seem to have the records for Salford there.

I will do an update as soon as I hear.

I've got the full inscription now but unfortunately it doesn't give any clues:-

Sacred to the memory of
Henry Lennard
who died March 12th 1868
aged 44 years
***
Erected by the
Carpenters & Joiners Societies
of Manchester & Salford District
as a tribute to untiring energy
and quenchless zeal exerted
on their behalf

Hopefully I will hear from Warwick University so everything crossed that they will have something.

Warwick looks like your best prospect now.

Yes I agree.  They are undergoing some major refurbishment at the moment so perhaps that is why I haven't heard yet.

Just heard back from Warwick.

They have very few records which date that far back and what they do have make no mention of Henry Lennard.

So I don't think we are going to find out what he did.  I think we can still put the inscription on the notable burials section of our website though because he must have done something worthwhile to have the Union erect a tombstone in his memory and you never know, may be something will come to light in the future.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi, I just spotted the entry about Henry Lennard who is my great great grandfather so as you can imagine I am very interested.  Did you ever find out anything else. For me I was wondering when he died so now I know

Thanks
