The Chartist Movement seems like a good possibility.  Seems like its going to be difficult to prove it though.

Possibly a son of Henry's baptised (age 14) at St Stephen, Salford:

25 Aug 1871 St Stephen, Salford
Robert Lennard - Child of Henry Lennard & Ann
Born: 13 Jan 1857
Abode: 4 Waterloo Place, Bury St.
Occupation: Joiner

from Lancs OPC.

Tallies with widow Ann's address in 1871 census (also has her mother Jane Frankish living with her)

Could see if the Museum of labour History has anything about him. That far back I would think it unlikely that branch membership records have survived.

Thanks for the baptism.

I will send an email to the Labour History Museum to see if they can help.

Just as a bit of an update.

I have contacted both the People's History Museum and the Working Class Movement Library  Unfortunately without success.  The WCML has records of the Carpenters and Joiners Union but they said 1868 is very early and the records are sketchy.  Henry Lennard doesn't feature at all.  They also looked into a Chartist connection as well.

It has been recommended that I contact Warwick University, which I will do, as they hold a lot of trade union records.  Apparently, once the smaller unions were amalgamated the records tended not to stay local.

Very often the records just vanished, sometimes very conveniently!

Have a look on the Manchester Past Finders database if not already done so:
http://www.dswebhosting.info/Manchester/DServe.exe?dsqApp=Site11&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Search.tcl

a search for 'Carpenters' with date range 1840=1870 brought up a collection of stuff in Stockport archives including annual reports for one of the amalgamated unions, 1860-1869.

Faint hope that some Manchester/Salford stuff got mixed up with Stockport's? or that Henry Lennard got an honourable mention in an annual report somewhere?
