Hi garlands......

Familysearch.org has a Ralph Menkeney marrying Mary Jennings on 15 Jan 1764 at Kenwyn, Cornwall. Looks promising, just 1 year before Mary was born. Note the surname spelling.

Lots of children by the looks of it......

Hi garlands,

Ralph MENKENEY = Mary JENNINGS 11 Feb 1764 Kenwyn

as to a possible birth, I don't see a MENKENNY but would wonder about this

Ralph MACKENZIE 27 Feb 1742 Kea father Daniel

Daniel MACKENZIE = Sarah PHILLIPS 24 Apr 1742 Kea

I note Ralph did have a son Daniel MENKENNE - there are very few instances of the name so I suspect it has been corrupted. In Cornwall very little occurrence apart from Ralph's family. MACKENZIE certainly not common either.  I would suspect the name was corrupted from this name. (accent)

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi krisesjoint & The Mc,

Many thanks for the information.

Do you think that 15 Jan 1764 refers to Banns, with the marriage taking place on 11 Feb 1764?

I've not had time to follow-up the other points, but it looks as if there's enough there to keep me going for some time!

Thanks again

George

I have 6 children for Ralph & Mary MENKENNY:-
Mary - 26 Mar 1765
Ralph - 4 Jun 1768
William - 2 Feb 1771
John - 10 Apr 1774
Daniel - 17 Nov 1776
Richard - 22 Jun 1779
all baptized in Kenwyn
As you say, the use of the name 'Daniel' could easily point to a grandfather; if only they had had another daughter and named her 'Sarah'!

Hi Krisesjoint,

Digging through my records, I find that I have:-

Elizabeth MENKENNEY bap 20 May 1742 in Pelynt to John & Mary (IGI C052971)

I had assumed that Elizabeth and Ralph were siblings; if so, that would appear to rule-out the MACKENZIE option. What do you think?

Hi Krisesjoint,

Another trawl through the records has produced a burial for Mary MANKENNY in Pelynt during 1761, no other details. Presumably, this is the mother of Elizabeth.
There is also a burial in Kenwyn in 1784 of Ralph MENKENNY; again, I have no details, so cannot tell if this is the father or the son.

Regards

Hi George,

I am going to stick with my theory. One of Daniel and Sarah's children was baptised William MACKENNIE in 1846 in Kea, their second William was baptised in 1850 MACKENZIE in Kenwyn. I realise there is the odd other occurrence of MENKENNIE and  like elsewhere but the instances are few and far between. John MEKENNY and Mary did marry in 1735 and have children in Pelynt quite regularly but no Ralph 1736, 1738, 1740, 1742, 1745, 1747. I do not feel these are Ralph's parents. John, Mary and family appear to have lived and died around Pelynt/Talland. Pelynt is in a different part of Cornwall to Kea and Kenwyn which are in the Truro district and we see quite a bit of movement between these Truro parishes.

In fact there are transcripts for Ralph's son Ralph's marriage listing him as MACKENNIE and MACKENZIE.  ;)

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris,

It looks as if I shall have to bow to your superior knowledge. I must admit that I thought Pelynt was a bit too far from Truro, whereas Kea and Kenwyn seem to be almost interchangeable. Incidentally, I assume that your William (1846) is really 1746, likewise William (1850) is 1750 - OK?

If the MENKENNY name is as rare as you suggest (and certainly I've not found anywhere near as many as you have) then the Pelynt family must surely be related to the Kea/Kenwyn family. Were John and Daniel brothers?

Thanks again for your interest and help

Regards
