Date and age of man?

Hello,

There is confusion over whether this is my 3X Great-Grandfather or not.

Please could someone let me know what year they think this was probably taken?

If it is William, he was born in 1851 and died in 1911.

There's a note written on it, which states he was a 'Free Diver'. (Not sure what one of those is either!)

Hi Glen :)

I think "free diving" is the kind that doesn't involve any air from a tank or from above - i.e. holding your breath!  So presumably he was a bit of a champ at it, if all those medals and cups are prizes for it.

As for a date, if it's the man you think then 1880s/90s is probable.  Hard to be any more certain than that.
