James and Mary Anne married in 1864 in Clonlara, Co Clare.  We know of at least four children born to this couple while they were living in Oranmore, Co Galway.  They were Elizabeth b 1865, John b 1866, Amelia & James born 1868.

It seems Mary Anne died young in 1869 and is buried in the CoI graveyard in Oranmore.  Six years later a James Black (her husband??) died and was buried in St Nicholas CoI Graveyard.  This couple left very young children and I would dearly love to know what became of them as I can't find any of them on the 1901 or 1911 census.

Can anyone help.

Cheers

Hello,

I can see Amelia’s birth in 1868 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1868/03416/2253010.pdf  but not James.
I only mention for searching purposes.

Do you have James and Mary Anne’s family in case the children went there.

M wife of a sub constable

As far as I am aware the graves in the church yard of St. Nicholas' Church in Galway City Centre is the only St. Nicholas Graveyard but not 100%

Elizabeth b. Feb 05 1865 LINK #190; bap. Mar 23 1865
John b. Dec 09 1866 LINK #492; bap. Jan 13 1867
Amelia b. Nov 04 1868 LINK #286; no baptism shown but there is a baptism on Nov 28 1868 for a James BLACK - I wonder is this transcription an error as the original is not online

There is a John W BLACK recorded as a RIC constable from Co. Clare who commenced in Dec 1897

There is a 1916 death of an RIC Pensioner, John William BLACK, in Roscommon Workhouse LINK #100

This unfortunately is NOT your John William BLACK as his father was a William BLACK a stonemason according to his marriage record LINK

Thanks a million to all who've replied in the past twenty-four hours.  After two decades of searching, I'm hoping some new information may emerge one day.

The difficulty is that the children would have been around 30 by the time of the 1901 census, so may be married (with surname changes) or have moved abroad.

I'll take your advice and continue searching..... and will talk to you all in another twenty years to discuss my progress!  🤢

Thanks again

Have you got the parents’ death certificates, particularly James.
Perhaps a relative was the informant.

Did both James and Mary Anne come from Clonlara?

Also is there now no James jr to look for?

Is there stuff you are not telling?

Mary Anne died young in 1869 and is buried in the CoI graveyard in Oranmore.

Where did you get this?
Is she alone in grave??

Six years later a James Black (her husband??) died and was buried in St Nicholas CoI Graveyard

Where did you get this?
Is he alone in grave??

Graves aren't free... so why not get buried with daughter??
