Skelton family
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 02:06 BST (UK) »
I am assisting my brother-in-law researching his Irish ancestry. His father, Samuel Skelton, was born 16 July 1922 in Northern Ireland (mostly likely in county Antrim). Samuel married Catherine Workman circa 1940. In 1961 with a family of 5 children they departed to take up a new life in Australia. It is believed that Samuel's father was also named Samuel, possibly born late 1890's, early 1900's. Is there anyone researching this family? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Wazzag

Welcome to Rootschat. There are only 5 Samuel Skeltons listed in 1911 census in all of Ireland- all Church of Ireland and all born and living in County Antrim- see here
Unfortunately the online civil registration of births only goes up to 1921 for Northern Ireland counties. (if Samuel Skelton is still alive please modify your first post by removing his date of birth as we are not allowed to put up details of living people).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
The most likely one from Aghadowey's list is the Samuel aged 13. This Samuel, father Graham, married Frances McKenzie, father Hamilton, in Whitehouse Church of Ireland, Carnmoney, Belfast on 25 Jul 1892.

Thank you kingskerswell. Why do you rank the 13 y o Samuel as the most likely candidate? Regards

Hi
The two older ones, Age 71 and 43 are already married but possible. The two younger ones age 7 and 4 are a bit young to have a son who marries about 1940, but again possible. That leaves the 13 year old who married Frances McKenzie. I must also apologise as I copied out an incorrect date for the marriage. It should read 25 Dec 1917, this probably added to any confusion.

Thank you, your logic does make sense. For confirmation, I shall now order a birth certificate for Samuel born 1922.

Hi
The date (25 Jul 1892) in a previous message, would that be for the marriage of Graham Skelton to Mary ???????. If that is correct, do you have a surname for Mary and a location for that marriage? Thank you.

Hi,
No, it was another date which I had written down. However Graham Skelton, father Graham, married Mary Jane Johnston in Carnmoney Church of Ireland on 4 Mar 1895. I can find that a Graham Skelton was born on 17 Jan 1872 in Belfast No 7 District (Carnmoney area) to Graham Skelton and Mary Humphrey who married in St. Annes Church of Ireland, Belfast on 16 Apr 1864.
Also a Hamilton McKenzie married Mary Beattie in Dumbeg Church of Ireland Lisburn on 4 Apr 1890.
