Photos of headstones in Garvagh Graveyard
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 12:22 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am hoping that someone will be able to take photos of headstones for McGuigan and Donoughy.    I am looking for a Michael McGuigan and Catherine McGuigan nee Donoughy and there children Susan, James, John Catherine and Ellen.

I would do it myself but unfortunately I live in England so it is not that easy.

Any help would be more than appreciated as I am completing this research for an elderly aunt.

Thank you for all your help

Kieran

Which graveyard? and are you sure there are actually headstones to photograph?

Hi aghadowey,

It would be the Roman Catholic graveyard.  I am not sure of there are headstones but I am hoping that there are.

Thanks

Kieran

PS I don't know the area at all

There are only 3 graveyards in Garvagh itself (attatched to St. Paul's Parish Church, First Garvagh Presbyterian Church and Main St./2nd Garvagh Presbyterian Church.
There are four places outside Garvagh where Catholics could be buried- really just depends on where they lived. There are graveyards at both chapels (known Boleran and Glenullin) and 2 very early burying grounds (Desertoghill and Errigal) where very few legible headstones are standing.
A bit farther away are 2 chapels near Swatragh, etc.

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for your reply.  I have made some headway since.  The family lived in a townland called Dunavenny which is in Slaght, Co Londonderry.

This is the family in the 1901 census

and them in the 1911 census

Dunnavenny is in Errigal Parish (Slaght is the D.E.D. in the census) which narrows it down to 2 two graveyards- old Errigal burying-ground (very few headstones) and the chapel at Glenullin (lots of headstones).

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for all your help with this.  Do you know what RC graveyard would cover Agivey, Mullaghmore, Aghadowey, Co Derry.  As my grandfathers wife was Dempsey from there and I would love to try and find the headstones to complete my research.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

Dempseys buried in old Agivey burying-ground for many years- only most recent Dempsey burials at St. Mary's. Only 5 Dempsey headstones in Agivey.

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for your reply.  Do you happen to know the names on the five headstones?
I can give you the names of the people on the headstones that I am trying to find.

Thanks for all you help
