User Aghadowey, my Great Great Grandfather was James Dempsey (1877).  Where did you get your information for the list of his siblings?  Is there anymore information about his parents, James Dempsey and Sarah Dougherty?  Thanks for your help!

I've been collecting Dempseys for years  :)

Am waiting for a phone call but will have a look through my files shortly.

Thanks for helping me out.  I know that James Dempsey (1877) married Mary McKay in Scotland - their daughter, Marold Grant, is my Great Grandmother.  I have quite a bit on the McKay's, but nothing on the Dempsey's.  Anything you could provide would be great.

Most of the children of James Dempsey & Sarah Dougherty are listed in extracted Irish births at www.familysearch.org.

Your great-grandfather is listed here-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGFF-8LB
Note: father's birthplace is not listed on birth certificates- this is the residence of the family and when LDS indicates this it usually means the child was born in a different townland than where the family was living at the time.

In the 1901 census the family are in Cornamucklagh:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Agivey/Cornamuclagh/1516103
Same townland in 1911:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Agivey/Cornamuclagh/652013
Note: Joseph Hogg or Dempsey was probably their grandson- there is a birth reg. in 1896 for a Joseph Dempsey but no Joseph Hogg in the area around the same period.

The marriage of James & Sarah was before the start of civil registration of Catholic marriages so I don't have his father's name. James was a bleacher at Mullaghmore and they likely lived in one of the houses associated with Barklie's bleach green there. Barklies ran into financial difficulties and by 1901 James Dempsey is a labourer working on local roads.

Here's a picture of the chapel the family would have attended in later years-

No headstones for your Dempseys seem to exist- it's possible they never had the money to put up a headstone. Previously there was a chapel at Mullaghinch (also known as Bovagh Chapel) but after it fell into disrepair the local Catholics met in various places (including Dick Toye's barn) until they obtained permission to build St. Mary's. There were no burials at the old chapel- the old Dempsey burying ground would have been at the old pre-Reformation graveyard at Agivey.
