I am not convinced that the first letter is M. I think he uses the same sort of beginning for other letters such as B in "...to my Brother George Brown..." and also R in "Ring" in the fifth line up - that does say ring doesn't it? Anyhow, is it possible that it is another letter which begins with a vertical line?

Yes it does say ring

fyi, the only 2 records that I can find relating to the surname Marmes in the mid/late 1700's are in the Ardeche, France.

The name pops up in the USA  much later.

Aarrgghh, where do I go from here?

Use wildcards?

m****es marrying wa*t*

gave me 29 results in IGI, one of which was:

   George Myres
   spouse:        Ann Waite
   marriage:   06 May 1767 — Hampsthwaite,York,England

but I don't know if that lines up with any of the sister's names, dates, etc.

Keep looking - they're there somewhere!  Also: is the "married the daughter of William Kent" a legend or ???
LEWNES/LIOUNIS from Greece, settled in Brooklyn, Kings, NYC, USA
ZBORAZ/SBORAI/SPORAY from Austria/Hungary/Czechoslovakia, settled in Pennsylvania, USA
GRAY from Galasheils/Hawick, Scotland
BAIN, SETH, GARDNER, DOUGLAS from Falkirk/Bo'ness/Linlithgow/Dumbarton, Scotland
MCGREGOR/MCGRIGOR/JARVIS from Scotland

For whatever reason, I cannot get wildcards to work on IGI. Is there an idiot guide to this? Hints gratefully accepted.

George Myers/Ann Waite marriage is most unlikely. There is a daughter Ann but she married my 5xggfather.  The date is probably 25+ years to late as well.

I have no knowledge of the 'daughter of William Kent'.

I think they only work on the new interface (which is a pain in many other ways!). Just put in an asterisk and it should work.

Which of Bridget's sister's do you have marriages for? And which are left unaccounted?

I suppose that one could have married this George as a second husband which would be even harder to find!

Ok, here we go  :)

Elizabeth 1706-? married Benjamin Cooke 1712-1743, memorial at Westminster Abbey to E & B plus 7-10? children, unlikely that she re-married. Mentioned in LB's will along with daughter Philippa

Sarah 1708, no other information

Mary 1711, no other information

Ann 1713-177 married John Scott 1701-1777

Margaret 1714-1749 married Lewis Griffin 1713-1761

I would not be surprised if there is one more daughter but it is probably Sarah or Mary that I am hunting the marriage for.

plus Bridget 1718-1786

Off to the Boston archives 30th April 'gap'hunting

Have you seen the entries on http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl  ?
They are not complete, some on IGI are missing from there. They have some burials too. The soundex is pretty good on there.
Did Bridget Wayet's father marry twice? Is John from the first marriage?

Yes I have, IGI & FreeReg compliment each other as they tend to leave out different ones !

I think that John may be from the first marriage, hoping to prove this on my next visit to the Lincoln Achives.

Finally cracked the unreadable name.

In 1742 Mary Wait married George Malme at St Georges Hanover Square by licence.

All I need now is to see the PR

thanks all
