COMPLETED - BIDLAKE, HOSE and WAKEFIELD Manawatu/Wanganui families
« on: Saturday 09 April 11 04:56 BST (UK) »
I received a marriage printout this morning (super-speedy DIA!) which confirmed I need to look at a different Wakefield branch of the family.

I'd be interested to hear from anybody with information on any WAKEFIELD or HOSE or BIDLAKE families in Palmerston North, Levin, Foxton, Wanganui or Hawera.

I know the family I want came from Nelson originally and were living in Foxton in the late 1890s:

William and Amelia (nee Schwass) WAKEFIELD
- son George William WAKEFIELD, m. Amelia Annie GREEN in Hawera, 1910
- daughter Clara Mary WAKEFIELD, m. Walter James BIDLAKE in Wanganui, 1909
- daughter Edith/Ida Rebecca WAKEFIELD, m. Frederick William HOSE

Can any Manawatu researchers point me in the direction of helpful local resources?  I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks John - I knew where George and Millie are - have even stood there  :-)

I hadn't found the Bidlakes or the Hoses yet - thanks muchly!     There have been two George William Wakefields muddled, who I think are actually cousins.  Maybe there are some Bidlake or Hose researchers out there who will know more than our Wakefield researchers have found out so far.

DIA are making a wee fortune out of me.

Another George William married Elizabeth Jane Black 1915.
He d. 1981 age 88 and she d.1975 age 78 and both at Timaru Salisbury Park according to Burial Locator, but does not appear on Council site at
http://www.timaru.govt.nz/cemeteries.html

added:
apparently salisbury Park is Crematorium only.

I haven't found any links between that Wakefield family and this one - althought nothing would surprise me!

Do you have any William Wakefields listed in your burial records?  At a guess, he would have been born about 1858, and he was still alive in 1898 when Amelia died.  She's buried at Foxton, but I have no idea what happened to him after that.

Only likely one I can see is a William Wakefield, d. 1928 age 76 (i.e. bc 1852) buried Te Kuiti.
You could ask for more details from Council site at

Thanks so much for your work John - very helpful!

I've been through all the William Wakefields on BDM who have died since 1898, and there are only three that could fit, including the one you've mentioned:

1922/3168 William Wakefield, 70 y (b. 1852)
1928/1325 William Wakefield, 76 y (b. 1852) (the one buried at Te Kuiti)
1929/3541 William Warren Wakefield, 72 y (b. 1857)

I can't link any of these three back to birth records, either under Wakefield, or under Lankow, the suspected mother's maiden name.  Any idea where the other two ended up?
