Try Lankow without the second L - there are likely to be a lot.  They were a rather prolific German settler family in Nelson.   It would be Christina Lankow, who later married William Wakefield snr.

I'm just guessing that, if William Wakefield jnr is her son, he would have possibly been born before she married and been registered under her maiden name, since I can't see a birth for him under Wakefield.  I think they were fairly relaxed about birth registrations anyhow.

I got caught out when researching another of her daughters, and a grandson was born with his mother's maiden name, then changed to his father's surname at some stage.

Hi,

Yes quite a few 'Lankow' in the South Island.

Christina only shows once which is her marriage to Wakefield. rather intersting is 'George William Christia Lankow' marriage 1891. I only say interesting as it is the same naming pattern as the Wakefield child.

There is a marriage for a Christina Wakefield, 1877 to a Joseph BUSCH, did she remarry after death of Wakefield?

I would need further names to produce anything def' for you.

I can see how the bdm are making good money from you, there are 2 unnamed males and one female Lankow, born with no parents listed, and the years would fit before the marriage to Wakefield.

You have been busy!

As far as I'm aware, the Southland William Wakefield is a different person.

The 1890, 1896, 1900 ones sound like my man.  Interesting - if he does come from the family I think he does, he has a brother I haven't confirmed yet named Thomas Henry.

The 1880-81 Carterton one could well be him.  If he was migrating from Nelson to Foxton, he may well have stopped on the way.

Thanks John - I knew where George and Millie are - have even stood there  :-)

I hadn't found the Bidlakes or the Hoses yet - thanks muchly!     There have been two George William Wakefields muddled, who I think are actually cousins.  Maybe there are some Bidlake or Hose researchers out there who will know more than our Wakefield researchers have found out so far.

DIA are making a wee fortune out of me.

Hi there

HOSE researcher here :)

Edith and Frederick are my great-grandparents.

Re the Wakefields, I was told that we were related to the NZ Company Wakefields but I've not found anything to support that, so far.

Oh, how wonderful!  You must be something like an umpteenth cousin umpteen times removed  :-)

The other Wakefield researcher I've worked with is descended from William and Christina's daughter Eliza Amelia who married James Coutts Dallas.  She's just sent me some interesting information that you'll find in the thread headed 'Charles LECHNER.'

Every branch of the family I've worked with so far has a family legend that we're connected to Edward Gibbon Wakefield's line.  No sign of any proof though.

It's looking more and more likely that we don't have Wakefield blood at all.

Helloooooo umpteenth cousin!

Yes, that's the legend we grew up with too and I did start digging into that at some point last year with no luck, yet!  Having spent some time looking into legends associated with other branches of the family, I've found that sometimes there is a truth in there somewhere.  Can only keep digging!  A winter project I feel...
