Frederick Ernest MARIES
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 08:14 BST (UK) »
My Great Uncle, Frederick Ernest Maries was born in 1901 in Birmingham.  He was a labourer.

He emigrated to Australia aged 21 years, departing from London on 1 April 1922 and sailed to Melbourne.

Can anyone help me with any futher information on him thereafter?

Electoral rolls show:

Frederick Ernest MARIES

1924 at Meran Downs, Kerang, Victoria.  Occupation: farm hand

1931 c/- H J Dawes, Kyabram, Victoria, farm hand

1936, 1937 at Westby Park, Kerang, fireman
At same address Nora MARIES, home duties

1954 both are at Riverside, Horsham.  Frederick is now a dredge operator.

1954 is the extent of my access.

The National Archives has a digitised record of him during WW2 when he registered as an excavator operator.  Gives an address in Shepparton and states that his dependents are a wife and looks like 2 children.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

Horsham, Kerang, Kyabram and Shepparton are smallish Victorian towns which you can see on Googlemap.  I would think Meran Downs may be the name of a farm property.

The digitised Labour Corps Record which can be found at the address posted by Judith states that Frederick had served 365 days in the B.E.F which looks like he had a year's service in the British Expeditionary Force during WW1.  He would have been young (born in 1900) but he could have managed a year towards the end of the War.

Wow - Thank you all for your information.  I could never have accumulated so much knowledge about my Great Uncle without all your assistance.  I think perhaps the reference to the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) may relate to WW2 rather than WW1.

Is it possible to determine when Nora Wilson was born and could someone advise how I might obtain a copy of their marriage certificate (assuming that is possible in Australia)

Also, how could I find out about his 2 children?

Many thanks again for all your help

Hi

You should be able to down-load a copy of the marriage certificate which should give you very good information about Nora and her parents.  When we have her parents' names we can help you further.

https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/CA2574F700805DE7/HomePage?ReadForm&1=Home~&2=~&3=~
gives general information and this page is the form for requesting the certificate:

https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=purchaseCertImage

You will need the registration number which Sue has provided for you.  The cost is $AU17.50 or thereabouts and you can pay by credit card.  you can then download immediately.

·   http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

I could not see a death for either of them in Victoria up to 1985 which is as far as the open records go.  Someone else may have other resources.

Let us know how you get on.

The BEF reference are more likely for WW2,  I can't find any WW1 records for Frederick.

The British BEF was the name given to the British Forces in Europe from 1939–1940 with the most notable event being the Dunkirk evacuation.  Frederick could have easily gone home to England and joined up early in WW2, serve for a year then be discharged with an injury and return to Australia.  His WW2 Labour Corps Records which he joined in 1942 does say that he had an injured spine.

If Frederick did go back to England and return maybe there are shipping records.

I managed to get a copy of the marriage certificate (attached) - I was very impressed with the ability to download the image instantly rather than having to wait for it to be posted.

I suspect I will not be able to determine who their chieldren were.

Thanks again to all of you for your help
