If, as I have now accepted, the coronet was actually part of the crest then it is perfectly reasonable that the coat of arms belonged to a gentleman.  I have in fact found a crest which is similarly described with regard to the coronet.  In that one the coronet actually sat on top of the wreath, but strictly the coronet should replace the wreath.  When used in this way as part of the crest the coronet has no significance of rank.  What confused me is that it was described as a coronet rather than a crown, but I now gather that unlike most other crowns the ducal coronet is described as such.

The wreath normally sits on top of the helmet and the actual helmet used is the best way of deternmining the status of the the person to whom the arms belong.

The crest was definitely used by a branch of the Cheshire Legh family.

The motto "En Dieu est ma Foy" "On god is my reliance" is usually associated with the Staunton family.

"En Dieu ma Foy" was used by the Staunton Family
"En Dieu est ma Foy" (translates to 'In God Is My Faith') was used by George Anthony Legh Keck

Im interested that there was another Legh family member that also used it!

Hi bankhallbretherton,

That is from the tomb in Lewisham Church, Edward Legh Esq.1797 Macclesfield to 1876 Lewisham, parents were Thomas Legh & Mary Anne Mills.
Thomas Legh 1765 Addlington Hall Macclesfield to 1829 Prestbury Cheshire.

That is about all I know prior to Edward.

The reference books that I have quote the Staunton Motto as "En dieu est ma foy"

A variant "En dieu ma foi" is quoted as used by a Favill

Hi Barry
is that Lewisham London? as i can only find that one and there seem to be a few churches there... I presume the tomb is inside the church? If you know which church it is then i would be very grateful so i could visit it.
also here is the Bank Hall Legh Keck coat of arms (see pic)

"Renovata 1832" was when Bank Hall was renovated for George Anthony Legh Keck.

Top shows the Ladys Head (Keck Family) and Rams Head (Legh Family)

Top right of the shield is Hesketh Family and unknown half (with Lion on a shield on st georges flag)
Bottom Right is unknown half (lion and the circles)  and Fleetwood Family
Top left is the Atherton Family
Bottom left is also unkown (Horses head and three unknown symbols thought to be gloves?)

"EN DIEU EST MA FOY" means "In God is my faith"

1608 was when the oldest part of the house dated from pre-renovation.

Any help identifying the unknown sections would be a great help
Thanks
John

Hi bankhallbretherton,

The church is at Lewisham Kent and the tomb is in the vicars vault beneath the church, remains of Edward De Legh of the Limes, Lewisham and of Newington in the county of Kent, Esquire and his wife Catherine.

www.kentarchaeology.org.uk  for Lewisham M.I.'s.

Only looked this up as one of my wife's Wait family married into the De Legh family in 1939 at Wallasey

That sounds like the Legh of Lyme (Lyme Park Cheshire) and Edward de Legh were related then... this is the same Legh's that were at Bank Hall. Peter Legh was born at Bank Hall and was later the heir to Lyme Park and various other estates and the current line of Legh's of Lyme are direct decendant from him ;D

Anyone any ideas on the coat of arms in my previous post? cheers

Sorry, can't help with the coat of arms, had to have help to get as far as I did.
Edward's father was Thomas Legh b. 1765 Addlington Hall, Macclesfield, his father could have also been a Thomas.
