Wanted...one photo of James Brewster Fisher, the artist...
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 18:41 BST (UK) »
     Hi everyone
As I do not have any photo of my grandfather James Brewster-Fisher and
of his family , he was a well known book illustrator and artist in London
at the beginning of the last century (1896-1913 ?)

He was born in Doncaster ,Yorkshire in 1871. son of James John Fisher and
Jane Christian but his family moved to London when he was a young boy.

In 1898,he was the Hon. Secretary of The Gilbert-Garret Sketching Club.

I imagine that there's a good chance to find a picture of him in art books
and books about British illustrators published in those years.

I would love to see what he looked like...

The Gilbert-Garret has connections to this institution, you might want to mail them to find out if their archives holds any information relating to it:

  Hello Xin
Yes in the book The Tyrants of Kool-Sim , there are
six illustrations done by him . I have read the book
but there is no picture of J Brewster Fisher in it.

I would imagine the most likely place to find a photo of him would be within the family... have you traced every line and contacted the descendants? Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think there would be published publicity photos of book illustrators unless he was very famous. I did a search at britishnewspaperarchive but there isn't much except a couple of very short pieces publicising the books, but they are always adding new papers so maybe something will crop up there. Do you know when he died? Perhaps there was an obituary printed somewhere.

Thanks
Chris

An interesting aside if you don't already know it is that he and his wife are mentioned in a 1910 book listing high profile Catholic Converts, so perhaps you might find more information down the Catholic route: https://archive.org/stream/a583403600gorduoft
