Hi Osprey, thanks for the information on 1871 census, that's really interesting.  Arthur and Robert John are missing.  Yes, I have a copy of the marriage certificate and Elizabeth goes by the name of Elizabeth Joy, widow.  Its possible Robert John had left home, but Arthur would have been a bit young.  Thanks everyone for all your help - it really makes it a lot easier when you have other input.

Albert McCulloch married Elizabeth J Anthony in 1893. She's living with her father in 1901, shown as married. No children, so sign of Albert. Elizabeth J McCulloch married in dec qtr 1913 Swansea vol 11a pg 2115. The only likely death reg I can see is in the GRO consular indices, registered at Chefoo consulate in China between 1901 & 1905 vol 11 pg 313.

The 1901 marriage for Ernest is his second, also one in 1896 to Anne Williams or Hannah Elizabeth Couch. I was looking at the consular bmds & noticed 2 birth regs in Malaysia, Sandakan consulate between 1896 & 1901, for Ernest Couch McCulloch & Ranee Elizabeth McCulloch. Now, there is a marriage for Ranee Elizabeth McCulloch registered june qtr 1920 Gower vol 11a pg 2916. Gower registration district covered Oystermouth where Robert senior was living in 1901, his death was registered & Alice's marriage was registered.

Wow Osprey,  now you have really given me something to think about and research - thanks for all your hard work.  Were are you getting all the info?  Is it the free BMD site?  I really appreciate all your input - I have found out so much more since coming onto this site.

the marriages are all from FreeBmd. The consular indices are on Findmypast & The Genealogist

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp

http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/

I haven't spotted Robert John, but Robert senior died in 1906. Ancestry has the National Probate Calendar covering that period. I don't have the level of subscription to see the detail, but there's a will for a Robert Mc Culloch in 1906 (space after Mc needed in the search!) If that is for the Robert living in Mumbles/Oystersmouth, it could give you whereabouts of surviving children & grandchildren. The incoming passenger lists on the same site might be of interest, outgoing lists are on Findmypast but only start in 1890.

The marriage in 1882 is the correct James as I've found him in the census. He's a doctor/surgeon & moves around. He's in Yorkshire for one census, & south coast of England for another from memory. Just say if you want details.
Jessie is living just a few houses away from her father in the 1901 census, enumerated as wife of a ship's captain.

Just checked one of my old favourites and looks like Albert was a ship's engineer, but no names of ships given
http://www.welshmariners.org.uk/search.php
that could explain a death in China.

Once again thanks Osprey for all the information.  I don't know how to thank you as you have really got the McCulloch family research out of the hole I was in.  I would really appreciate details of James in the Yorkshire census and the South Coast census.  Also details of the 1901 census for Jessie and Robert if you have them.  You have put so much time into research for me and I really appreciate it - thanks so much.  I was able to find what I think is Roberts father James and the family in a Scottish census  for 1841 so I am able to take the family back one generation.  Its all a question of knowing where to look and I am still learning.
