the other census might have been 1911 & we can't give details from that because of copyright. Possible marriage for daughter registered as Elizabeth Grace dec qtr 1866 Gower vol 11a pg 785

Elizabeth G McCulloch sept qtr 1915 Battle vol 2b pg 118 to John A Bancroft
can't see any children registered to this couple

marriage reg
David Gwyn june qtr 1865 Llanelly vol 11a pg 866 with Elizabeth Higgs the only other on the page

I agree that looks a likely family for Robert in Stranraer. Can't see an extracted baptism for Robert, but the 2 older children in the household have baptisms in IGI extracted batch C118994
Janet bp 25/9/1820 dau of James McCulloch & Janet McDowall
James bp 19/4/1824 same parents
Robert's marriage cert would confirm his father, just in case he's staying with relatives as no relationships given in 1841.
If you can find a death reg for parents of Robert after 1855, names of parents should be given. I found one in 1855 for a relative of my inlaws the other day & the level of detail was amazing - names of sblings of the deceased, but that only happened in
1855.

marriage for possible parents of Robert IGI extracted batch M118872 for Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire
James McCulloch & Janet McDowall 29/9/1819

Looks like daughter Jessie was called after her paternal grandmother.

Bmds, parish records & more for Scotland
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

It's a pay per view site, so best to use in conjunction with IGI & other records so you don't waste credits on checking results.

Can't believe I forgot to recommend this site that searches the Cambrian newspaper!

http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=6197

several mentions for the family including inquest for young Arthur (he drowned), marriage of Alice, marriage of Sydney in Bloemfontein. Search on McCulloch & McCullock.

another spelling from the Cambrian - Muculloch - leading to this marriage reg

Elizabeth McCulloch  dec qtr 1893 Swansea vol 11a pg 1246 with Ivor Griffith Williams on the same page

47 Mansel St, Swansea RG13/5076 folio 99 pg 55
Ivor G Williams head mar 43 mechanical engineer & ship repairer Employer b. Glam, Neath
Elizabeth wife 39 b. Carms, Llanelly
Ivor B son 6 b. Swansea
Robert M son 4 b. Swansea

death reg Ivor Griffith Williams 47 dec qtr 1904 Swansea vol 11a pg 567

Ivor B was registered as Ivor Brinley Williams. There is an Ivor Brierley Williams born Swansea of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment who was killed in the First World War 23/7/1916 who I suspect is the same person, no other Ivor Bs registered. Just checked the Cambrian index and this has confirmed it.

I've been trying to work out where Alexandra Terrace was and it appears it's part of Norton Road, not far from Oystermouth Castle.

Once again thanks so much.  You have given me a lot to think about and have really broken the deadlock for me.  Now I can move forward, put it all together and find other members of the family.  Thanks also for all the links etc.
Yes on Roberts marriage cert. his father is listed as James so I think the 1841 census is the same family.

Hello  ;D...I'm a bit late to the party, but I just want to thank you all...I am the great granddaughter of Ernest Billing McCulloch. He sent his son, Ernest Couch McCulloch out to Australia when he was 16 with small amount of money (I can't remember off hand how much it was). I has been an very interesting read, as I always thought that I wouldn't be able to find my ancestors...but here we are :)

Hi Helen,  I was interested in your post.  Would you be prepared to share information on your side of the McCulloch family.  I am the granddaughter of Sydney McCulloch who went to South Africa from Wales.  There are a couple of McCulloch ancestors who moved to Australia and are still living there.

I agree the site is not easy to navigate.  From what I have there are the descendants of Jessie Mcculloch in Brokenhill NSW who are now Browne's, Devan's and Bowles.  If you are interested I can give you the information I have.  There was a Clifford McCulloch who died in 1898 and is buried in Toowong cemetery, but as far as I know did not have any descendants.
