Linsdell in and around Linton
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 21:19 BST (UK) »
I recently discovered my 5th great grandfather, PAMPHILLION LINSDELL (1701) of LINTON, and I believe his father was MATTHEW and his mother, SARAH.  If anyone has information to help me further with his past, I would be very grateful.  I have his siblings and descendants, I think, but am eager to know who aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents were.  Happy Easter!

Welcome to Rootschat!

Phillimore's Marriage Index states that in the 10 Sept 1728 marriage at St Andrew the Great, Cambridge, Pamphillion Linsdell was of the parish of Linton, and Jane Chelsy spinster was of the parish of Great Abington, and it was by licence.

The IGI at www.familysearch.org is a good place to start, but there are two types of entry - extractions from parish registers which are reliable, and member submissions which aren't. The one that The Mc mentions is an extraction. It's also far from complete.

David,
Yes, I have the record of that marriage and their daughter, Sarah (1730-1739).  I believe Jane died in childbirth or soon after in 1730, and Pamphillion married twice more.  I am trying to learn more about the earlier generation(s) that would include his parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents, to connect him to some of the many other Linsdells in the area who might be his cousins.
Hope there is some more information hiding in the cobwebs out there.  Thanks for your speedy response!

Linton baptisms pre 1732 are on the BVRI and are also on Ancestry.

29 Nov 1701 Pampillon Lindsdell son of Matthew and Sarah
20 May 1705 Elizabeth Lindsdell dau of        ditto
30 Jan 1706 Sarah Lindsdall               ditto
24 Mar 1709 Lee Lindsdell dau of Matthew and Lee

I can't find a marriage of Matthew to either Sarah or Lee, nor is there a baptism of Matthew in Linton.

The earliest Lindsdell baptism in Linton was Thomas son of Thomas and Martha on 16 Oct 1673. This couple then baptised John on 16 Oct 1675, Stephen on 22 Dec 1683, Anne on 6 Feb 1686, and William on 1 Apr 1689. With no baptism of Matthew I don't know if he was connected to these Lindsdells or not.

Perhaps someone with Cambs Marriage and Baptism Indexes might look up entries for Matthew pre 1701.

Cambridgeshire FHS has a CDrom of Linton parish register

I have been scouring the IGI and have considered that siblings of Matthew Linsdell could be the JOHN who married Ann in Linton in 1699 and whose marriage produced Anne in 1699.  Also the THOMAS whose marriage to Jane? in Linton produced Jane and Katherine in 1694 and 1701.  Also the ROBERT Linsdal who married Anne Pluckrose in Linton in 1690.  These names are repeated often in later generations of the family.  Of course, these are names that are repeated in almost every family of the time, so I don't know how much weight that carries.  Anyway, thank you Margaret and others who have been checking into this with me.  If anyone can connect MATTHEW LINSDELL to JOHN, THOMAS, ROBERT or any other siblings, PLEASE share information.
