German Grandfather - Any help or pointers please.
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 20:46 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather on my mother's side was born in Berlin in 1898. He died in Hannover in 1964. I understand that he was a high court judge and spent time in a labor camp during WWII because of his anti-socialist views. His name was Ernst Albert Herrmann Panzer and he was described as "Oberlandesgerichtsrat" He lived in Celle during and post-war. His fathers name was Johannes August Friederich Panzer and he died in 1903. I know very little about this side of the family and would like to learn more. Grandfather had a "dueling scar" on his cheek.... Any input welcome

Guy;  Did you search any records from the camps?  Not sure what the government would have but it is worth a try.  Regarding your grandfather you are in luck in one respect.  There was a law in Germany at one time that disallowed two poor people from marrying.  Couples would live together as man and wife but the children would have to take the mother's name - it makes for some difficult searching.  I am still trying to get an exact time period on the law.

Good luck with your search.

Thank you for that. I am sure there must be some records somewhere, but many would surly have been lost in WW2.
