Wardley Street Wandsworth
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 22:06 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a photo of Wardley Street Wandsworth. My Dad George Boyd lived there with my Nan, Edith Boyd nee Wright/Long, Grandad, George Boyd, my Gt.Grandoparent's James Long & Rose Long nee Wright.

Rose was James Long's 2nd Wife - their children were - Austin, Charles, Rhoda and Violet. James died in 1949, in Wandsworth, Rose in 1963 also in Wandsworth.

They all lived at 73 Wardley Street. James Long was a Greengrocer and had a horse and cart.

Any help will be greatfully appreciated.

Faith

You might find an old photo at a local history centre, archive or library.  Have you tried googling?

Thanks for the reply.

I have been in contact with the local history centre and they have none. Perhaps I will keep badgering other places.

Thanks

In a very truncated form Wardley Street, SW18, stil exists.

You can google street view and get an up to date photo of the street.

Many of the streets where my ancestors lived (Battersea) have also long disappeared or have been left in a very limited way.

But you can at least see what it looks like now.

UPDATE: Wardley Street and many others in this area were complete slums, I have photos of a street not too far away and you would certainly not want to live there now.  A shopping centre would be a vast improvement.  But in this instance it looks like the houses were demolished and the street shortened.  There is a shopping centre at the other end of Garrett Lane!
Fleming (Bristol) Fowler/Brain (Battersea/Bristol)    Simpson (Fulham/Clapham)  Harrison (W.London, Fulham, Clapham)  Earl & Butler  (Dublin,New Ross: Ireland)  Humphrey (All over mainly London) Hill (Reigate, Bletchingly, Redhill: Surrey)
Sell (Herts/Essex/W. London)

Looks like they plonked a shopping centre right on top of most of it.  :(

Thank you for that.

I will google and look on the map to see what is left of it.

A real pity, but that's how it goes.

Hi
I haven't got any pictures of Waldley street but I can tell you what it was like.
I was burn in the next street in 1945 and I had a lot of cousins who lived in the waldley street.
My uncle who lived there was a street trader he had a horse and cart.
If you go on google eath you can look down the street which is now called Lydden road.
It is full of factories.
If you want to know any thing let me know.
Ray.
