Sarah Place
« on: Monday 25 April 11 15:45 BST (UK) »
Im looking for information on Sarah Place, Islandbridge, which was a collection of tenements replaced in the late 1960's with the existing flats.

I have heard they were called Sarah's Cottages at one time, and were used to house soldiers and horses originally.

I can find no reference to the place online in any resource, - they were possibly outside the city limits, - or belonged to another parish with a different name.

What Im interested in is their history, and how and when they became tenements availabel to the general population.

regards

Sorry, - its in Dublin, Ireland.

I did find the same references to Sarah Bridge, and an old photo, - which is of the bridge right beside where these tenements were.

I will be in Dublin for a week beginning of June and will go to the city archives to see what I can dig up. Ive always found it so strange that this place seems to be non existent on the Web, though many people libed there for many years, and the location was eventually condemned by the Dublin Corporation on mid 1960's with a lot of the residents re housed in Arbour Hill, as St Bricins Park.

Thanks all,

regards

Willie

Hi,Sarah place was listed as being in the new Kilmainham ward on the 1901 and 1911 census. It was in St James parish although that church is  a distance away on  the south side of the River Liffey, both are in the postal district of Dublin 8. Sarah place faced the phoenix park on Conyngham Road/Chapelizod road just before the turning to cross Island bridge(formerly Sarah Bridge).I have heard it said that the original buildings were soldiers houses(not cottages that I know of).I'm not sure at the moment when exactly they were built. There is an archive of old photos online too if I can find the link again.

Thank you soooo much for that RTE link, - its terrific, - memory lane for me.

I did see the references in the Census, and actually knew one person listed in the Census at 9 years of age who was an old lady when I was a kid.

Regards

Willie
