John Stringer-Rockcliffe or Rawcliffe
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 02:06 BST (UK) »
I am looking for family information on my great grandfather, John Stringer, who was born approximately 1818 in Rockcliffe or Rawcliffe or Selby West Riding, Yorkshire.  He emigrated to Canada between 1840 and 1842. He married Margaret Arbuthnott in Canada in 1842. I know his birth year from a Canadian census.

Thank you
YukonJean

Hi YukonJean

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Can I ask where the birth place info came from?

Do you have any information from the marriage please, e.g. father's name for John

       Hi Evie

Thanks for getting back to me. The birth place information comes from a Biography of John Stringer's grandson Arthur, who was a Canadian author. The biography states "The Stringers were Yorkshire folk out of Rockcliffe and Selby in the West Riding." However some family genealogy online records state John Stringer's birth place was Rawcliffe. There is no documentation for these records.
The marriage information comes from Canadian Anglican Church records and John Stringer's parents are not named.

Hi YukonJean

The nearest I could find was John Stringer (from the IGI) baptised 3 JAN 1819 Rawcliffe By Goole, Yorkshire, England, parents Cornelius Stringer and Rebecca Lawson (extracted record)

Rawcliffe near Goole today is about 11 miles from Selby

Evie:

Thanks for the information. This looks like it could very well be my ancestor. Also, thanks for introducing me to IGI. I'm new at genealogical research and IGI looks like it is a valuable resource.

Hi YukonJean

This is a good link which I often use where you will find Cornelius' marriage to Rebecca Lawson plus possible sibling of John, George Stringer

Hi YukonJean,
I have looked up Parish records  and can confirm Evie's data 0n 28th April with the addition that Cornelius was a labourer and that the Vicar was William Gibson.
Additionally and it might assist your research:-
David son of Cornelius Stringer/Phoebe Crossland born 3/7/1814,
;baptised Rawcliffe St James church. This Cornelius was a butcher. The Vicar was Edward Bracken...and:-
Cornelius Stringer/Elizabeth Bradley married by licence at St Lawrence Church 12/8/1779 at SNAITH.This village is a couple of miles from Rawcliffe. He was a batchellor, she was a widow. Both signed the register. Both were"Of this parish"He was a farmer and the witnesses were Ann Smith and George Milner. The curate was Mr Bracken.
I hope this helps.

Thank you for your help KLM

It seems there were several men named Cornelius Stringer from this same general area around the same time. I wonder if anyone knows how I can determine the relationships (if there are any) between these men.

Don't know if you are still looking for info on John stringer info, but I have also been researching him a bit as we live in the house he built in 1854. I believe he came to Canada in 1833. If you see this and are interested let me know.
