Waihemo Heritage Trust Museum, Palmerston ... Otago

The museum has recently moved to new premises where there is more scope for the  displaying of artifacts, photographs and other records etc.  There is much information available about the history of the district including a number of Family histories.

Also available are the burial records for not only the Palmerston but other cemeteries in East Otago.

The Museum is located on Tiverton Street, just off Ronaldsay Street (SH 1) Palmerston, opposite Warrens Garage. :)

A small fee may apply for access to records and any research

Inquiries are welcome.

Hi Alex

Thanks for information, my 2x great grandparents are buried in Palmerston, so that is good to know they hold the burial records,  I wonder if there would be some kind of records for what burial plots have headstones.  Will look them up on Facebook and then contact them for further information.

jericho :)

Hi Jericho

My great grand parents are also buried in the Palmerston Cemetery with several of their family.

I know they in fact hold the burial records for the Palmerston Cemetery together with a map of the cemetery at the Museum.

I will be in Palmerston within the next fortnight as I have some work to do at the cemetery as well.

If you care to PM me (off this board) with your family details I will do the inquiries for you and arrange for photographs of any gravesites.

Will also be visiting Archives NZ in Dunedin on the way.

Cheers

Alex

P.S.  When I get to Palmerston intend to arrange for the Museum to put their own posting on Roots Chat which should make it easier for everyone !!

Hi Alex, The Museum is a little treasure..been in twice. Also the Local Library has a good collection of the old cemetery records and a map ..also headstone and non headstone info. I have a great great grandfather buried there..no headstone but with the records and map were able to exactly locate the grave....Cornelius Hurndell...served in the Crimea war started a Brick works around 1868...in Palmerston. The museum had an early photo, but have been unable to locate the original site...will keep trying. Any helpful leads would be great..also trying to track down his house location....Many thanks.   Kind Regards, Chris Howes.

Hi Chris

I will be in Palmerston and the Museum next Monday 23 May.  If you require anything to be done let me know.  Also calling into Archives NZ in Dunedin.  Have a couple of days in the areas.

I had the same problem with my great grand parents locating their address and home from when they arrived in 1875 until 1913 when they took possession of their last home (Land Information NZ).

Prior to that used school records, Papers Past (Otago Witness), Church records, Waitaiki District Council (Oamaru) and Archives NZ (Probates and Railway staff records), Electoral Rolls and Stones Directories etc.  Prior to 1913 found several references to my family but no hard address.  It seems street numbers were not used until to the early 1900's.

PM me if you wish with anything further.

Cheers

Hi Alex, Great shot of the Waihemo Heritage Museum site at Palmerston. The backdrop of the Puketapu Summit really captures the essence of the town and the Museum. Also thanks for your help and insight on Monday as regards the various ways of sourcing 'Family History'  I have sent a request to the NZ Land Infomation for any title records that may be available for early Palmerston. Will let you know if they show up.      Cheers,  Chris.
