If anyone planning a trip to the Records Office had a few minutes to spare.........
My great uncle is supposed to have fought in WW1 but 70% of the records were destroyed and I haven't been able to find him. There are several people with the same name in the medal cards index but basically the last chance to know if he did serve is the Absent Voters lists for 1918/19. This is a list of soldiers away fighting who were entitled to vote, this would give his address and with which regiment he was serving. Although he was 20 in 1918 and the voting age was 21, soldiers over the age of 19 were allowed to register to vote.
Thank you.

I'm sure that someone will be able to help you, and failing that, you could try contacting the staff at the RO to see if they could do a search for you.

HOWEVER - you do need to give us his name!

The register of absent voters was taken in 1918 and alot of them do survive. Some are online eg. For Accrington they are here:
http://www.pals.org.uk/avl/index.htm
but most are at local record offices. The Leicestershire ones are available apparently.
