Hi, James Porteous was my x3 Great-Grandmother's brother. Any relation to anyone here? His parents were James Porteous (1798-1866) and Jane Gilbert (1801-1839). His wife Margaret Nicol died in 1895 and remarried to a George Gerry who died in 1878, after James' death. He had three sons that lived into relatively old age, though only one of them married. One was Ninian Porteous (1865-1939), another a Presbyterian Minister, Rev. Thomas Porteous (1861-1939) and another a man named George Porteous (1864-1935) married to Mary Fairbairn I think. He also had a daughter whose fate I don't know, Maggie Porteous (1868-?). I do know however, that she married a Charles John Cooper. It is good to see a picture of the headstone, surprised it still stands today.

Hello All,

I know this reply comes very late on.

James Porteous, who married Margaret Nicol, was my great-great-great grandmother's brother. Son of James Porteous (1798-1866) and Jane Gilbert (1801-1839). The elder James Porteous was the son Robert Peronneau Porteous (1777-1842) and Louisa Ferguson (c.1777-1824). Robert and Louisa had another grandson named George Murray Porteous Esq. (1834-1915) whose memorial still stands in Colinton where he is buried alongside his father and mother. Can give more info if desired. I was wondering, primarily, if there any extant photographs of this family? Fred Porteous, if still alive, may know or have some himself. I wonder what relation he is to this James? Hope to hear from someone soon.

Best Wishes,

Tony
