Portland Prison UK and C Quarters
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 03:12 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know what "C Quarters" near the Portland Prison UK, was? My father was born there 25 Sept 1940 & his father worked as a warden at the Portland Prison teaching inmates animal husbandry. If anyone has any info, ideas or ways to access records I'd be grateful.

Welcome to RootsChat aker21.

C Quarters will be the housing to accommodate married wardens, similar to married quarters in the forces.
There is a pictures of some quarters c1900 on this site, you need to scroll just over half way down.

Thanks so much Jebber, that is really helpful. My daughter is visiting there this weekend exploring where her Grandfather was born: she is currently living in London, we're from Australia & Dad died here in Australia when I was 5, so we dont have alot to go on when exploring where her Grandfather was born & Great Grandfather worked & lived with the family. I found the photo of the accommodation and forwarded it onto her, explaining it was now demolished, so not to go looking for it based on the photo. Thanks again for your help!

Glad to have been of help. You may already know of the Dorset OPC site, if not, you may find it interesting. Click on Portland and it will take you to a page where you can access some more pictures. It is also useful for researching Dorset ancestors.
