Hardings in Maestag
« on: Thursday 05 May 11 19:05 BST (UK) »
Lilian Catherine Harding married Edwin Alfred Jones,1906 Registry Office, Pontypridd, aged 21. Her Father is Edward Harding, a hotel servant.  She married from the White Hart Hotel, Pontypridd.

In 1901 'Lily' can be found with her parents Edward & Ann Harding at the Red Lion Hotel, Commercial St. Cwm Du, and says born Maestag.
I believe her parents to be Edward Harding and Ann Richards who married 1874 in Bridgend but I need to find her birth to prove this.
I have checked several without success:
Name: Lily Catherine Harding. Reg:1885  Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar : Bridgend : Glamorgan  Vol: 11a  P: 635
(the father was not Edward Harding).
&
Name: Lilian Harding. Reg: 1887. Quarter: Oct-Nov-Dec : Bridgend  County: Glamorgan  Vol: 11a  P:598
(Unfortunately the father of this girl is Thomas Harding and the mother Hannah Evans).

If anyone can help me in finding her birth would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Alison,

Do you have the actual 1885 birth cert? It seemed such a perfect match! Don't the mother's name and address at birth coincide with what you know either?

at the time I didn't have any clue about the mother's name, and I put a check on the Father's name - Edward Harding. I was told it was not a match and so the certificate was not issued. I suppose I ought to spend the money and get it just to have a look but it all mounts up and it is nice to keep the cost down if someone out there knows the answer.

In the 1891 census, there are 3 Lilian/Lily Harding's in Galmorgan - all in Bridgend district.

1. Lilian Harding, age 4, b Kenfig Hill
Parents: Thomas (39, b Kenfig Hill) and Ann (36, b Neath)
Living at Box Terrace, Lower Llangynwyd

2. Lilian Blanche Harding, age 4, b Coyty
Parents: John (27, b Newton Nottage) and Susannah (23, b Landore)
Living at Heolfawr, Colwinston, Cowbridge

3. Lily Harding, age 6, b Maesteg
Parents: Edward (38, b Maesteg) and Ann (40, b Maesteg)
Living at Church Street, Cwmdu, Maesteg

So you must be careful not to confuse the Lily's!
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Precisely why the 1885 birth registrations looks so good - there are 3 Lilys and 3 birth registrations, the other 2 registrations matching the 2 other Lilys quite exactly...

Although your Lily marries as Lilian Catherine, in the latest available census she seems to be Lily Catherine (well, there's a Lily Catherine Jones born 1885 Maesteg anyway)

That is helpful thanks. She does seem to use Lily mostly, and the family knew her as Lily. I wonder if she was baptized and if so what variation of the name.
I think I need to send for this certificate and hope for the best.
thanks
