Help - LINES LYGO
« on: Thursday 05 May 11 21:52 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace relatives of my grandma who was illegally adopted in 1926
She was born in Yeovil (18 Talbot Street) to Horace William Lines and Florence Edna Lines (nee Lygo)

That is all the information that I have been able to find thus far.

All other lines run cold, I have tried B,D&M and Cencus checks, something just dosn't add up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Carl

She could not be illegally adopted, i.e. against the law. Prior to 1927 there was no formal adoption process, and the term "adopted" generally included fostering and guardianship. In many instances a child was simply "adopted" into the extended family or taken in by neighbours/family friends and brought up as a member of their own family. Occasionally it was arranged through a solicitor, doctor or charitable organisation but adoption was viewed as an essentially private arrangement between the parties concerned. and nothing to do with the law.

Not sure what you mean by "All other lines run cold, I have tried B,D&M and Cencus checks, something just dosn't add up."

Are you sure Horace and Florence were married to each other?

According to FreeBMD a Florence E. Lygo married Oct./Dec.1926 Nottingham district (volume 7b page 808) James H. Wilde

Hello Carl

Do we assume that your grandmother was born in 1926 and the registration district was Yeovil?
What was the occupation of the father Horace William Lines?
Was Florence employed?
Does your grandmother have any other christian names?

Horace William Lines appears to have been born in the Sep qtr of 1901 Northampton R.D....living with his family in 1911 in Leicester, which is where you will find your gr grandmother Florence Lygo and your great great grandparents James Henry Lygo and Annie Lygo.....
and it appears Horace William Lines married Carrie Meldrum Coote (born 1900 Henley R.D) in 1946 Abingdon R.D

1901 census (they lived number 110 Brandon Street in 1911)
106 Brandon Street, Leicester, Leicestershire
James Lygo....Head....44....Boot Getter Off....... Leicester
Annie......"......Wife.....43....................................Leicester
Arthur.....".......Son.....21...Boot Forepart Parer..Leicester
Edward...".......Son.....19...Boot Clicker...............Leicester
James H..".......Son.....15....Boot Fitting Cutter...Leicester
Mary E....".......Daur....9......................................Leicester
Alfred......"......Son......6.......................................Leicester
Emma E..".......Daur.....4.....................................Leicester
Florence.".......Daur......1.....................................Leicester
------------

1899
Florence Lygo was born in the Sep qtr of 1899 Leicester R.D

Having just had a look
It is highly likely that your grandmother has siblings in Marjorie R born 1921 and Leslie W born 1922...both born in Leicester

1901 census
13 Inkerman Terrace, Northampton St Sepulchre, Northamptonshire
George Lines....Head...43.....Bricklayer...........Rothersthorpe, Northamptonshire
Mary.........."......Wife....43...............................Northampton
Harry.........".......Son....19..Railway Goods Porter...Blisworth, Northamptonshire
+ 6 boarders
----------

Unfortunately i'm not allowed to show you the 1911 but Harry would be your great great grandfather
-----------

So it appears that Horace & Florence never married but they might have lived together for years prior to the birth of your grandmother and to know that you will have to go down the route of the electoral registers for the period 1926 and go back year on year if they are together? doubtful but you never know...

Having just had a look and they might well be living?

Marjorie appears to marry in 1940 and quite possibly has a son born 1944, both events happened in Leicestershire

Hi Bryant
All looks very interesting, and thank you for spending time looking into this.

Grandmother born 1926 18 Talbot Street Yeovil

Her birth certificate shows Horace and Florence as married, I can't find this marriage
Horace is a travelling Salesman

I presume this would be his second marriage in 1946?

Do we know who are the birth parents of Majorie and Leslie

How does it show they are married? Is Florence listed as Florence Lines formerly Lygo?
