Hi this does not answer specifically your question, but if Oldham Road Newton Heath is in the St Pauls District of Manchester, then on a 1901 address search, their are 3 in Oldham Road, 1 with a weird name!

75/77 Oldham Road "Brittains Protection" occupier Thomas McDonnell occ Publican b Ireland

85 George Inn occupier Miles McCarthy occ Beerhouse Keeper b Liverpool.

203 Old Pack Horse Inn occupier John James Atherton occ Publican b Oldham

I wont bore you with a long line Iam following but the name Joseph Crookes (Licensed Victualler)has come up and his Daughter and Son-in-law are mentioned at the Royal Union in 1899 so my thoughts went down the its a pub road ,so it looks like the Royal either closed down or is something else.
Thank you again for your help

Hi just about to post that it was oviously the wrong part of Manchester I posted, yes I have found with a bit of help the CROOKS family in 1891 it was at 117, Oldham Road RG12/3251/11/15, I also found a site Manchester Registration District 1871 Census Street Index P - R, where the Royal Union Inn is mentioned in Oldham Road.

1901-George Pope-Beer Retailer. Obviously stayed as a 'Pub' of some sort.

Crookes Joseph, beer retailer, 25 Hulme Hall la. M P

Hulme Hall Lane, Miles Platting is not far from Newton Heath. (Still exists today)
